anyone use mycobags other than the grain?
    #3643122 - 01/18/05 01:56 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I have only heard of growing p. cubensis in the small grain bags so far. Can any of the large bags be used for p. cubensis? (corn, wood, straw?) Why dont they have a large grain? I imagine the yeild would be much higher if it is possible at all.

You can use them to sterilize manure or straw also.

The reason they have never produced a Large Grained based MycoEnvironment Bag is really because of the poor testing results we received when first considering the product. The larger substrate mass and bag size just doesn't have the right air exchange ratio to make fruiting inside the bag (the goal of the Grain Based MycoBag) a reliable experience. Obviously a larger substrate block could be fruited unrestrained in a bigger humidity chamber, but the results at that point would be close if not the same to the Large Grassland Bag, or the Large Corn Based Bag.

There are tens, if not hundreds of grow logs in the shroomery archives that show various projects on bag mediums other than the small grain based bag. Do some searches in the Grow Log Forum in particular and I'm sure you'll find exactly what you're looking for.

Have seen lg quantities of grain done in bags , but not fruited in them . When doing lg amounts pc for 2 hrs to make sure get good steam penetration of the bag . Have also seen bulk subs done in bags , but again once pced and ready it is transfered to a large tray .
And it was all done in Sporeworks lg bags with filter patch .
I see why they themselves do not do it and then sell to public , way to many risks involved , especially since they are so cool about exchange policy .
So yes it is possible for home user to do it , just make damn certain you get good steam pentetration .

I ordered some grain and rye bags the other day, cant wait to get em  Iv had ok result with jars but Im still having too many problems with contams even after ridiculous amounts of sterilization (i think its because I live in a house with ALOT of animals and dont have the space to dedicate a room to my babies), Im hoping the bags will help out with contams.

That's one great benefit of working with presterilized products, especially bags. You can pretty much remove any problems with user end sterilization. When the bag shows up clean you can eliminate all contamination vectors (other than source injection materail). Good luck with your project, I'm pretty sure you'll be completely satisfied. Just remember to observe poper incubation temps, it's a simple thing but many people forget about it, especially in winter months.

tripndicular: you are right that larger grain mass in any container (bag or jar) presents more problems with contamination and proper sterilization. This is the major reason why MycoBag.com doesn't sell a Large Rye based bag. Rye just starts to have consistancy problems in large volume. However the Large Corn Bag product doesn't, nor does the really great Large Wood Based and Straw Based bags.

People really should give the Wood Based bags more experimentation. They are great for a WIDE variety of fungi cultivation.

Anyone ever used the straw bags? I was thinking of trying some Pan Cyans in the straw bags, then casing...

you could always enhance yourself a bit and buy a pack of their bags and have fun experimenting with various uses for the bag. I've recently used 2 large spawn bags of rye which im going to use to spawn to pre-sterilized spawn bags full of horse manure.

Then I'll just case. voila, easy bulk grow.

I plan on starting an outdoor patch of P. azurescens this spring. My question is what kind of bag should i use grain or wood based.

-I was thinking with wood based i could skip the middle step and
just mix my colonized bags with wood chips in the ground.

-Were with grain i have to colonize the bags then colonize some
sterile wood chips with the bags then again with some wood chips in
the ground outside.

any tips, experiences, or ideas would be great. thank you.
