Personally, I doubt I'd do it unless they looked absolutely harmless. And I had a knife in my car. 
My cousin hitch-hiked all the way up the west coast though, and into Canada. He had a blast.

I used to hitch-hike. In my experience the people picking up the hikers are more dangeous then the hikers themselves (who are usually hippy/prograaming druggys who need a ride to there college  )

I don't pick them up here in the US unless they look like someone I would really trust and hang out with. Even then I'm very careful.
However, when I was in Australia I used to pick them up all the time. The cool thing was that most people who were touring around w/ backpacks would have a flag on their pack from their country of origin. I would always pick up the Americans just to see if they came from anywhere near me. And most of the time I would pick up just about anyone there. Just seemed a lot safer.
I myself have never had any luck hitching rides. I sat by the side of the road with a sign for a whole day one time and didn't catch one. I was trying to get home to Vegas from California and I had to break down and buy a bus ticket. Never tried it again, it was a waste of a day.

i usually do.
new years eve i was heading up island and picked up a couple kids, stopped at home found out i wasnt heading up till later. gave em a ride to the highway and we boxed teh car. i have to admit i dont think i have been so stoned in quite soem time.
hitchikers are cool, always learn somthing. but i am selective based on looks....dotn want some freaky lookin bugger stankin up my seats in fact ive met a couple yanks from picking them up and showing them around a bit. hippies are cool

I picked up this one motherfucker about 4 years ago.
goddamn.
I drove past him
saw he had dreads, so I thought he'd be alright.
dude was cool for the 1st hour....then he got progressively weirder.
he had a stutter and his nickname was Re-run.
he was into metal and liked to huff Glade and other shit
he told me all about it.
he played some metal cd - it sucked. I should have known what
a motherfucker he was by his music taste.
he smelled real bad - he had been living out in the woods for 2 months.
we got to the town I was driving too & could not shake Re-run for the life of me. he came into our place just asking to use the restroom. he sat down on the couch and would not leave - he didnt get any hints at all. he told me this story about how the last time he was in this town he got beat up by a bunch of frat dudes. "oh, yea? that sucks man." he said he whispered into a random girls ear at a party "you're fucking hot. I'd like to fuck your pussy with my knife." he laughed and laughed and thought that was real cool.
at this point, I said "listen re-run, I havent seen my friend in two years. I think we gotta ask you to leave."
he got all mad and yelled.
saying something about I owed him some money because I didnt drive him far enough. he got all into my face and started accusing me of stealing his shit as well. then he said "oh yeah, bitch I got my knife with me. what you gottt gottt gottta say about that? [he stuttered]?"
I dont like to fight, but I had to knock this motherfucker out. He came towards me...and I just straight up jacked him in the face. he fell straight down like a pussy. I stomped on him and told him to get the fuck out or else I'd break his fucking jaw and put him the hospital.
he left and never returned.
we were on guard tho with bats + 6-pack most of the night.
