Why 420???
    #3574136 -

The term '420' in India is used to label someone as 'naughty' if they are doing something wrong or socially incorrect. The Hindi pronounciation is 'char sao bees'. So just like the word 'ganja' is the term '420' of Indian origin also? It seems to be used mostly in the states, not very common in australia, not even the biggest potheads have been able to shed light on this mystery... anyone know?

???

"An origin story according to Snopes.com and The Straight Dope claims that in the early 1970s a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California used to meet every day to smoke marijuana after school at 4:20 PM. The time became a code word for the drug, and usage spread. 4:20 PM has since become a popular time to "smoke out."

hahaha, i heard that story before, i used to live around san rafael!!

I agree with exclusive58, it is a reference to the time to smoke out 4:20.

That story just seems a bit farfetched, but then again I guess everything starts out small... thanks for the links everyone!

420 originated in the High Times Hemp 100.

people mistakenly believed that 420 was the la police code for someone caught smoking pot.

it went around for a while, then it started appearing on the hemp 100 every month
