Why 420???

The term '420' in India is used to label someone as 'naughty' if they are doing something wrong or socially incorrect. The Hindi pronounciation is 'char sao bees'. So just like the word 'ganja' is the term '420' of Indian origin also? It seems to be used mostly in the states, not very common in australia, not even the biggest potheads have been able to shed light on this mystery... anyone know?

420 originated in the High Times Hemp 100.

people mistakenly believed that 420 was the la police code for someone caught smoking pot.

it went around for a while, then it started appearing on the hemp 100 every month
