Well no, I do think there is a definite line that can (will?) be crossed where our system of government would become fascist.

As is, any of us is free to leave the country in which we live (as long as you don't already live in a fascist state). That freedom to chose for ourselves is what separates our current situation from true slavery.

A slave is never permitted to simply walk away.

Does a slave-owner still own his slaves if he spends the money on services for them?

Is a slave free to leave his owner and venture on his own? An American citizen can leave the Country and refuse to pay taxes or allow the US any control over him. Because of that I would say the government in the US does not own you.

If a Country were to deny a person the right to leave the Country I would say yes, in that situation the Country ownes you.

He is if his master says he is. Also, with government, you can never truly "walk away"--only choose a different master.

He is if his master says he is.

Then he is no longer a slave, is he?

Also, with government, you can never truly "walk away"--only choose a different master.

Would a person be a "slave" if they were able to chose who they work for? I require a job to survive (at least for now), so I must chose at least one "master"...yet I am free to chose which one I want.

I don't think you could equate parenthood with slavery; stewardship is a better term. In old patriarchal societies, women, children, and livestock were all regaurded as the property of the man. Generally speaking, modern civil rights have advanced beyond those archaic traditions (at least in 'western' culture).

In regards to the government: don't forget the government is supposed to represent every citizen in the country. If you're paying taxes, you're supporting the community (everyone within the nation's borders), because a community cannot thrive without everyone contributing their share.
We (the West) have moved on past times when new housing was built by every able man or woman to a time where labor is represented by paper bills and binary code. So a contemporary citizen supports the community (the nation in this case) by giving away a fraction of his/her labor, i.e. wages.
You might say you have no choice whether you want to support the nation or not, I'd say you do. Move out to the middle of nowhere, buy a piece of land, build your own house and live off the land. If you have no income, you can't pay taxes. Likewise, if you live in a community that encompasses only your family, you can support them directly by working with and for them.
The downside of that idea is, you won't be able to have anything that requires money to get: technology, readily available food, tap water, electricity, gasoline, etc.

If you do want those, you'll have to admit you're a slave to money before you admit you're a slave to the government.

SS7,

what if you bought a sailboat and just roamed the world. Who or what would be your governing master then but the weather and the seas?

And the owning our children question. Anything beyond having awe and respect for them, being a nurturing care giver, guardian of their safety, supporter of vital needs and teacher of life here is.........................................power tripping crap.

If any significant revolution of consciousness takes place, you'll see it in where children break the old world systems down. Back in the day, the adults broke the children down to bend and mold them to their ways of life. More and more, now the children are breaking the adults down to bend and mold them to their way of life and it's beautiful. hahahahahahahaha It does take two. back in the day, children were to be seen and not heard. More and more adults are just listening now.

You guys are going to be blown away by your kids to come if you choose to have them.

While we're on the subject, what of the government?  They claim a portion of the money you earn at your job.  Does this in fact imply that they own you?

Clearly they are two separate cases. One involves a (small)portion of income being taken, and the other entire.
Either way, anyone who complains : " the government owns the system, breaks the rules, is not following the constitution, , ETC" well of course.. But when was the last time you enjoyed driving on a road.. You mean they pay millions for the roads?!!:wtf:

But I wonder if it is worth it, all this government support and building of America.. sometimes I wish I could give the roads back for dirt trails! That is how we are trapped.

As far as owning someone, that California law is damn near close in to days society when $$ = power. But if the parents provide essentials there is no need for money. I actually think the law is BS, it is against the constitution clearly... I hope Frog will double check for us.

i personally think you need to use and examine our definitions of freedom when talking about ownership. is a slave allowed to walk away? probably not. can he/she? yes. they can any time they want, but there may be consequences. as can a child from home or school. only untill they are physically heald tehre are tehy not free to leave. perhaps true ownership is a physical boundary that makes one unable to escape.

you may pwn your car, on your land. but if someone with more guns than you says otherwise....its not really yours anymore is it?
