I was wondering what substrate and casing people have been having good luck with, with these two strains? I was going to use hawks formula and 50-50+ to case with. I see people are also having luck growing the mexi's in dung. What do you all advise?

50/50+ is a winner...less likely to contam than other orgainic casings (i.e. other Peat or Coir based). If it is your first time, you might consider an easier substrate than dung. Indeed all strains of cubensis should grow great on dung. Although your first attempt on dung may result in a great success, may I suggest starting your spores on a more forgiving substrate the first time around. You can inject jars of various, pressure cooked substrates. The PF recipe is more than suitable and simple for someone just getting the feel for farmin'. Other recipes than include combinations of BRF/grains/Verm can be just as easy to manage. One of my favorites is equal thirds of BRF/Rye/Verm, placed into the jars without tamping down. Follow the directions for a dry verm layer @ www.fanaticus.com...By using equal thirds, you provide a lot more volume of food in each of the cakes than with the original PF recipe. I think there is recipe for higher fruiting which will increase the BRF to verm ratio. Higher food ratios in your substrate mixtures will require a little more attention to moisture content. The cakes you produce can be cased together (preferred by some) or fruited without casing at all. A colonized cake or two can be set aside while you go through the first life cycle with the others. If you feel comfortable after that, those jars that have been set aside, can be used as spawn on compost or dung. PESAs and Mexis both will be suitably nourished with BRF cakes and combinations of BRF and grains. The results of your first attempt will likely be less influenced by the substrate that you use and more by the attention you give to providing the suitable conditions needed for the organism and avoiding contams. If you do a great job the very first time on dung, your results should be more plentiful than a good attempt at cakes alone. However, starting simpler and progressing without being timid will increase your chances of reaching harvest at all. If you would like more information on the preparation of mixed substrates for jars gimme a PM. For basic BRF cakes, consult the PF tek. Good luck! -Rhino

Yeah, go with BRF/Verm for starters...once you get the knack for that, I say give birdseed a whirl and THEN try your hand at dung...

Thanks for the tips Rhino. I've grown using BRF/Verm many many times. That's pretty much all I've ever used. The only thing that holds me back from dung is having to sterilize it in my kitchen, SMELLS!
I might PM you some time soon Rhino. Thanks again guys.
