Cob Web mold?
    #338062 - 06/11/01 04:38 AM (15 years, 8 months ago)

An aquantince has some un-innoculated substrate jars he prepared about a week ago using PF tek. Since his spores are late in arriving he has left them to sit in a sterlite container and observed them for contamination. The jars were sterilized by boiling/steaming(boiled for 1 hour) and use of a pressure cooker(cooked around 15 PSI for 1 hour) ...6 jars each. 2 of the jars that were pressure cooked now have a very light white stringy contamination on the sides and bottoms..the stuff almost looks weaved together..tiny little threads almost invisible until close inspection. The contam has progressively got thicker and whiter after isolating them. This sound like cobweb mold? My aquantince is still new to cultivation and unfamiliar with the appearances of most contaminations. He cannot figure how the 2 jars became contaminated..especially after being PC'ed. None of the others even the ones boiled have shown signs of contamination as yet. One thing though...he had to stack the jars in his PC because he owns a very small model. 3 on bottom and 3 stacked on top....perhaps this had something to do with it.. or perhaps not he does not know.

Well it sounds like cobweb.  Maybe the contam entered after sterilization, i.e. jars drawing in unclean air as they cool, maybe those two jars were just unlucky.

4 out of 5 inmates agree.  The FSR is better than being raped by your overweight roomate!;)

Sounds like you've got a contam. Try to identify the source before it costs you spores. Did you leave them in the PC overnight or pull them out as soon as pressure was down? What kind of cooker do you have? I found the Maxim self-contained PC to not work very well for the job. A good old-fashioned Presto 22 qt makes a good sterilization workhorse.

The jars were left to cool in the PC for about an hour before removal into the sterlite container. The boiled ones were immediatly removed and placed in the sterlite container(soaked in Lysol). The brand name of the PC is Mirro Matic ..it only holds 3 half pint jars on bottom...6 if stacked. 2 out of 12 isn't bad I suppose but I may buy another PC . Saw a cheap $60 canner at Wal-Mart the other day.

If you are using brown rice flour / verm you don't need to pressure cook
