Tyvek with or without metal lid?
    #3377062 -

if one was to make rye jars, what would be the advantage of using the metal lid, it seems as though tyvek alone would prevent moisture loss and have maximum gas exchange. bandaging injection site(s) would keep jar sterile. what do yall think?

I've seen it done plenty of times without the metal lid. Just patch the noc hole with tape or something.

Rye dries up really quick, so my friend would be scared to leave the metal out.

I've done it using both.. The jars without dry out a little more, but not enough to hinder things IME.

Most people who do it with no metal lid (Anno, Myself ) noticed the rye gets to dry. All I can say is try it both ways and see which ya like.

thanks, will do half and half and see if there is a noticeable difference. I will still make large hole for gas exchange as well as seperate innoc hole. one more question, when using metal lids, should I have rubber side down or up, and also should the metal be on top of or below the tyvek. thanks again

Anno has experimented with this before. He concluded that tyvek + a metal lid with a decent sized hole would allow for good gas exchange without drying out the grain.

Id try a one inch hold in diameter.

Rubber side down as long as you are using a vent hole..

and the tyvek should be on top of the metal lid.(I usually put my innoc hole in the center so i know where its at through the tyvek.)

I have tried popcorn, with lid and tyvek and had trouble with the grain being too wet. Maybe using just the tyvek I could solve my problem?

What would you use for a filter? Polyfill?

I always keep the metal lid on with a 1in diameter hole. Gas exchange is important but your humidity should be correct from the start, you shouldnt be concerned with it being to wet/dry, if you just do it right, tyvek doesnt need to be a cure for a problem that isnt there. Keep the metal lid...who knows how well yuo sealed your tyvek, or if it ripped or something.

Be safe
