lots of great diving if that is your thing. you will have no problem finding the devil's weed, just avoid the airport sellers unless your *best* judgement tells you otherwise. lots of beautiful off the path locations, bring a digi cam with multiple memory cards. the blue hole is the shit, just chilling out there for a day is something to do.

^ in this post i assume you are going for outdoors/adventure purposes. the night life isn't that happening, but there are cool museums and historical attractions for during the day. the people are nice becuase tourism is their source of money. its a good historic, relaxing, explorative adventure :stoned:

a friend of mine went to cuba via mexico city.
she said it was cool - tourists are royalty there.
food and drinks are good.
lots of poverty.

i used to live in cuba in guantanamo bay. we couldn't leave the base though, but those fuckers PARTY. in the distance we could see little cities and hear the music and they were pretty far off too. i can't really help you with the tourist part though.

i'm not too sure how close to the gates of the minefield you will actually be able to get from the communist side. on the american side though, they have tours that run along the fence line and right up to the gate while a captain of the marines bullshits with everybody.

i know caimanera is pretty close to the base and they must be one of the fuckers that partied loud. we could see that city from the base. i think there's more to guantanamo than just guantanamo bay...i'm not really sure. i think you may want to stay more north and west though, that seems to be where they cater more to tourists. the east seems more crude. real dry and desert like.

I don't want to hit the tourist traps...I'd like to see more
of the rural cities and life....remote beaches and stuff.

Your an american citizen so it is very possible...also Guantanamo has the best snorkling/diving bar none ...best in the Carribean period...
Ive spent a lot of time in Cuba but you can pm me bitchley if you wanna know more...I need a scanner so i can upload my pics of when i was there...its really very nice and you can get on the base still im pretty shure :thumbup:
