Written by Wilfred Owen, died days before World War I ended. Still rings true today...
THE PARABLE OF THE OLD MEN AND THE YOUNG
So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went,
And took the fire with him, and a knife.

But where the lamb for this burnt offering?

Anyways, I'm sorry, it could just be the language, but I don't understand.
Why did Abram want to kill his son for asking where the 'lamb' was?

Well my personal interpertation would be that Abram (a nation's leader/ descicion making body) didn't want to kill his "son" (or the youth of a nation/cause) who didn't fully understand the point of going to war(the knife-you go to war you will be killing your soldiers) He ask why do you prepar for war...where is the rational use for arming[killing a lamb for food etc]). Pride caused Abram to send them to war(or bounding him with straps and building trenches around him). The angel says to offer your pride instead of your youth. But Abram chose to offer the youth of Europe instead of his pride.

seeing as this is based on the biblical 'story' of abram (later to become abraham), the reason he wanted to kill his son is because:
god told him to sacrifice his son, proving his loyalty to god. abram didnt like the idea, but went out to do it anyway. he took his son to the top of a mountain to sacrifice him as a lamb would be sacrificed, but before he could take the knife to isaac, god (in this case, an angel) stopped him, saying that he didn't have to kill him, he had already proved his loyalty. a lamb was provided [trapped in a thicket bush], and that was sacrificed instead.
if this was just like the bible version, the last two lines of this poem wouldnt be there
