the black (warning pics)
    #3307672 - 11/02/04 03:02 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

annie and i keep going on these backpacking trips this fall and they have ROCKED (me praises the gods of serendipity and luck), just wanted to share, so here are some more pics. went on the black river, it forms the border between the san carlos apache and the white mountain apache indian reservations. fairly remote to get too and some parts had no discernable trail just rock, water or bush which was kinda cool.

this was actually part of the trail, there was quite a bit of this staircase type rock.

the last two are from the campsite

this is the confluence of the black (to the left) and white (to the right) rivers. you can see the white's muddy waters hitting the blacks clear dark water. this is also the head (beginning) of the salt river that runs into phoenix.

had to cross the river many times

this part was so friggin cool. the river becomes very wide and shallow as it travels over rock. we are standing in the middle of the river. there were deep skinny channels all over so it was like maze or puzzle to walk around. best part of the hike. some of the channels were underwater also.

peace

Beautiful and absolutely stunning pics! Good job and thank you. But what's the round rock formation in the third to last pic? Some kind of volcanic tufa?

i think so, it was all over and got rolled around by the river....this particular rock had those lizards was all. the lizards were only 1 1/2 inches long or so.

Also looks a bit like fossilised coral.

Beautifull looking place, you can clearly see why its called the black river.

Think you could get me that volcanic rock next time?

I could use that in place of the perlite in my "friend's" grow chamber to provide humidity!

Beautiful pictures man.

take hwy 77 to globe, then go north on hwy 60 to carrizo. turn left on hwy 73 toward white river ( the town ). take a right on indian road 9 ( there is no sign thats says #9 indian road, just one that says amos wash ). after 7 miles from hwy 73 you cross the white river and after 12 you hit the black. indian road 9 is a dirt road and has a few rough spots ie dont take a car with no ground clearance. our outback did fine.

you have to pay special fees to the white river apache reservation to hike on their land. it was 10$ per person per day. technically we should have paid the san carlos reservation also since we crossed the river numerous times. but didnt. also we saw black bear tracks, so use basic bear country precautions.

as for the rock, I WAS BACKPACKING, so probably wont haul a bunch of rocks out  . it has been tempting at times, usually it has to be a really cool rock. one time i carried a rock out form the bottom of the grand canyon and gave it to Cherrybom if i remember correctly

also im still trying to get a hiking trip togethor for jan-march. currently considering these two areas.

http://www.az.blm.gov/sfo/aravaipa/aravaipa.htm

i have been told this is one of the most beautiful canyons in arizona..and vastly unvisited

http://www.az.blm.gov/asfo/recreate/backpack_trails.htm#pchike

the paria canyon one...both trails would require a person to be in reasonable shape as there is no way out other than hike or helicopter rescue(very expensive)

these both would be warmer winter hikes, but still warm clothing would be required esp at night

very preliminary planning stage...if interested pm me

I'm a bit of a desert lover, its my Arab blood :-)
you have some fine desert I'd love to visit, as does
Australia. Deserts are normally fairly untouched.

Yep, that's it too. Give us another 20 years on this continent and we'll have a nuclear reactor in the center of the Grand Canyon.

Probably a good thing that Canada owns the Niagara Falls or we'd be polluting and abusing those as well somehow or another.

Beautiful scenery and fat people for population. The fat people throw the mc donalds wrappers out the windows of their 89' Chevy truck that has no cadalidic (sp?) convertor right into our beautiful scenery, all the while chugging down their milk shakes and adding to their disgusting habitual weight problem.

Compare any country to ours and we have the laziest, fattest people.

Seen someone else do this and thought it was funny (but basically true) so here it is:
