Brian Wilson - Smile
    #3285784 -

So have you heard this album yet? The story goes - it was supposed to come out as a Beach Boys album in 1967, right after Pet Sounds. Well, Brian Wilson went a bit crazy... I'm not really sure of the story, but he locked himself in a room, took a lot of LSD, and went a bit schizo.

And then, one month ago, he released this album - after finishing recording in Spring 2004.

check it out - i've given it a few listens through and really dig it!

I was actually thinking about getting this, though I've never been into the Beach Boys.

Are all the songs previously unreleased? Or is he reusing a few?

You'll have to excuse my ignorance.

well, from what i've read (and heard) - the songs aren't really new - they were all written and worked out for a '67 release. but brian wilson kinda went crazy... and so the album never came out. this album doesn't include any of the original recording sessions from '66 and '67 (i guess he had started losing it during the sessions, and so they didn't reuse any of that material) - instead, wilson re-recorded everything with his touring band this spring. the only previously released song is "Good Vibrations", but not really, because the version on Smile is very different. so, the songs aren't really new, but they have never been released until now.

i'd recommend it - just finished listening to it through for maybe the 3rd time... definitely worth checking out (esp. if you are a fan of vocal harmonies)

Most of the songs have been released in one format or another. There used to be a website that had almost all the tracks from Smile available to download.

I just listened to a sample of it, it sounds pretty good, but I'd be happier if he used the old sessions...the album was pretty much complete when he gave up on it.

I'm not sure what to think of Brian Wilson these days. Have you seen the guy? Definately done too many drugs in his life and he's probably pumped up on valium now...its a shame, the beach boys were just about to get really interesting at that time
