Weilii and Gyms- Lots of PICS.

Well, I don't have much time to explain things but I promised I'd post pics tonight so here it goes.

Went out hunting for weilii this weekend and found a ton of them and 3 seperate patches of active Gyms... Growing in lawns. There had to be some kind of burried wood under the ground because they're not supposed to fruit from lawns. Anyways... I always feel sketch taking my cam out into people's lawns and taking pics. It's better to be descreet. That said, I took all the pics once we got home.

Here's some pics of the haul:

Before being cleaned(regular pack of cigarettes in the middle):


This is after being cleaned and split up between me and my hunting partner. The gyms were so beefy that I had to cut them in half so they'd dry:

We found some of the biggest damn weilii I've ever seen. Here's a pic of the largest mushroom sitting on a pack of cigarettes:


The 3 biggest(that a bottle cap on the stem):

This shows the potency of weilii... The cap of a normaly brown mushroom turned greenish-blue because of all the psilocybin:


Another indicator of potency, the weilii turned so blue they appeared black upon drying over night:


I had never seen any pictures of weilii with a veil so I decided to get a picture of one:


Now for some pics of the Gyms...

It was hard to tell if these gyms were actives or not, they didn't show brusing very quickly. I was about to throw them out when I spotted the first hints of green/blue in them(blue arrows point to the green/blue):


Brusing in the previous picture was after about an hour... here's what they looked like after 12 hours(and a little bit of drying):

Yeah, definately keep an eye out for them. They just started fruiting to my knowledge. I was talking to phishhead on AIM and he said he's seen them growing in lawns right by his weilii, but didn't know they were active.

A few key features for making sure they're gyms and not something poisonous:
- They should have a veil or at least veil remnants
- They drop orange spores... normaly the surface under them will be coated in the orange spores.
- They should bruise green (yellow + blue = green) after 5-6 hours. The pins seem to bruise better than the larger ones
- They are bitter as all hell, tastes like ass.
- They should be entirely orange, gills and all
- A most of mine had a scaly appearance on the cap

I'm anxious to try Gyms because I hear the trip is quite different, even though they are psilocybin mushrooms. I've got no clue on dosage. I'm about to read up on it in Psilocybin Mushrooms of The World.

great info... the ID features will help me when( if) I find them... large orange mushrooms= easy to spot...

BTW, those gyms grow in any age neighborhood? or are we looking at 5+ 10+?

The neighbor hoods I found them in were around 4-5 years old I believe. I looked up the activity and it said "Moderately active to inactive." Apparently it varies from specimen to specimen.
I'm sure molecular biologist are waiting to tear this genus up with their DNA sequencing. It'll really suck when they start differentiating species based on DNA. Thats just dumb, IMHO. Microscopes are hard enough to come by for most people, but a DNA sequencer? Forget that.

I say if it bruises green and matches all the other features, then you can bet it's active.

those are awesome finds.. i hear to get effects from gyms you have to ingest alot of flesh, supposedly gross amounts

ha borealis they are smokeless ashless ciggs, called eclypse. i dont smoke but my friend smokes em and they are pretty cool.

Hi Gumby,

Your gyms resemble the one's I find
fruiting in lawns up here in RI..I've been
thinking they may be g. leutofolius?? I really
don't know exactly but they are different than the
big laughing gyms.. They bruise blue/green more redily
also..I need to get that book.. on gym's..but like you said
the different species really doesn't matter... I think those
are stronger that the other types..IMO... the dosage should be
anywhere between 5-15 gms..5 should get some low level effects..
10 in my experience is nice.. never gone 15 although I hear it'll get
you right there... dry weight of course...Nofindum...

Nice, thanks for the info nofindum, thats been the only information I've heard about Gym dosage. As far as species goes, I'm really not sure. I'm about to call up an old friend who knows a lot about Gyms, and I think he's got a copy of the monogram, perhaps he could help.

As far as the cigarettes go, they're Eclipse brand, made by RJ Reynolds. They have a plug of carbon in the tip that vaporizes/heats the tobacco instead of burning it. Like phish said, they don't ash. When they're done burning they look like a cigarette that's had about 2 puffs off of it. Only thing I don't like about them is they can be a bitch to light. More info on them at www.eclipse.rjrt.com

I am pretty sure I stumbled into a patch of gymnopilus while out fishing the other day , just 2 small specimens that match your pics to a tee . Do you think they could really fruit in the cold temperatures we are having in Iowa right now? (lows of 30-40 and highs of 65-70). I would really love to pick my own mushrooms in the wild but I know I am out of luck for any of the common psychoactive mushrooms being that I live in Iowa. I have read the hunting forum for a long time and I have never heard of anyone finding an active an Iowa, I would love to be the first ...like I said the ones I found the other day match yours exactly and they dropped orange spores, could I take a little taste to see if they are bitter or is there a look a like that could poison me? Any help would be appreciated thanks!

It's very possible that you did find Gyms. They favor colder weather and I seem to remember people finding them in GA up to a month after the first freeze hit. Just verify that spore print is orange, that's very important because there is a very poisonous look a like.
