safe to eat?
    #313359 - 05/09/01 06:22 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

this kid i know who grows his own mushies has a question. there's a nice healthy mushroom growing with a smaller one which aborted (cap turned dark color, almost black) like yesterday or this morning. he was wondering if it's safe to eat the little abort with the big healthy one, or if it's definately a no-no? what about if he just cut the rotted cap off and ate the stem? input needed ASAP. thanks!

i tried to search for "safe to eat black cap" and nothing came up. is it easier to tell me to search than just give me your educated opinion as an answer to my question?

it's easier to READ than to ask someone a question for an EDUCATED opinion ... i'm sure if you typed in abhorts then you would find out that they are safe to eat ... your just used to instant gratification thanks to this society .. it's not your fault...

FF.. This is a tough question cause nobody wants to tell you to eat a rotten shroom. If it's mushy rotten, then hell yea, toss the whole thing. If the stipe if firm and the cap is hard, I can't imagine the harm. I'm not the one who'll end up in the emergency room either. So use your best judgement. If you don't confident about consuming it, pitch it out. Fun to grow more, not fun getting sick.

I didn't have any luck w/ 'abhorts' in the search engine.

My chimp has eaten many a blackened-capped shroomie. He finds that there is no difference, really, unless the thing is soggy-rotten, which would be disgusting.

I don't understand why you wouldn't have any luck with the word 'abhorts' as that's how it's supposed to be spelled. I just did a search and I got a whole bunch of hits. Go figure.

I got hits, but none were relevant to the question.

yea that's what i thought about the spelling of the word.. i tried it and then misspelled it and got more hits(making me think that this was the correct spelling)guess not;).....the reason this question or answers for this question were probably "hard" to find is because almost every tek written which describes everything  from innoculation to harvest usualy states CLEARLY that you can eat abhorts... go fig.

go fish
