Milk
    #3059433 - 08/27/04 08:54 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Over the last few weeks I've been drinking vanilla soy milk. The other day I ran out, so I had some whole milk. That stuff fucked up my stomach. I was in pain for like the whole day. It was so bad that I was about to have to leave work early. I think that going to be the last time I drink whole milk.

Do anyone else here prefer soy to regular milk?

I always use soy. It's more convieniant because it doesn't spoil nearly as fast as milk.

I've never tried it, but I've heard from many that it was pretty tasty. I think I'll try some soon.
Is there a big difference in the taste?

Yeah I can't handle regular milk very well either. I actually prefer the taste of soy milk anyways. Haven't tried vanilla though. When I was little my mom used to get me sweetened soy milk that came in a green can with light green circles on it from the asian food stores. They looked like regular sody pop cans but were made out of steel I think. Now you can find soy milk at most any grocery store. I buy Silk.

As an added bonus: soy milk doesn't have rBGH mixed in with it!

Then again, neither does Canadian milk :smirk:

I've tried soy milk. I'd drink it if I couldn't get any real milk...but only then.

Sounds like lactose intolerance. I've never had soy milk for that matter, although I may try some later.

it's a growth hormone, not every Dairy farm uses it but a large majority do... there may be links to cancer, it may also be responsible for overly developed pre-teens (seems to affect girls the most)

The FDA refuses to do any research on it claiming that the hormone doesnt 'trickle down' through meat or through milk.

Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone

It's a drug that the FDA approved a few years back to be used in dairy cows. They inject the cows with it and it artificially over-stimulates milk production. Made by a company called Monsanto.

The FDA approved it even though it passes readily into the cows milk and thus into the humans who drink it. It has been linked to certain types of cancer and such, although both Monsanto and the FDA deny that claim.

Health Canada (our version of the FDA) decided to BAN its use here in Canada over the health concerns. There was a big hooplah over it when they banned it, with the dairy industry lobbying for its use and Health Canada employees saying there was a "conspiracy" to suppress information about the harmful effects of rBGH. Many Health Canada employees said they were pressured to allow rBGH use despite the health concerns. Luckily for us, Health Canada stuck to their guns and the ban remains to this day.

Also, a few years back there were two investigative reporters working for Fox News who did a special on the rBGH issue (Jane Akre and Steve Wilson). They were VERY concerned over the health issues that they had uncovered. The spot was ready to air, and Fox News had even run some commercials for it, when Monsanto sent a fax to Fox demanding that they NOT air the show. Fox execs asked the reporters to re-write their story and remove ALL "critcism" of either Monsanto or Posilac (rBGH). The reporters refused to do this, citing a mountain of evidence they had uncovered. After over NINE MONTHS and something like SIXTY re-written editions Fox still refused to air the show. The reporters were eventually fired from their jobs for refusing to conform to the Fox lawyers' demands (ie: Monsanto's demands).

That's just the human side of the story. The drug itself does horrible things to the cows. Some animal rights groups are claiming it puts the cows through a large amount of pain and unnecessary medical complications.

Pretty nasty stuff, if you ask me. The FDA still claims it doesn't pass into the milk? WELL HEALTH CANADA DID THEIR OWN STUDY AND YES, IT DOES PASS INTO THE MILK AND THEN INTO HUMANS!!!
