you can count me in. i know 2 people who are working the festival. maybe what happened at bonnaroo this year with the fences getting knocked down and people driving right in will happen again. Then our only worry is a wristband if they are needed. I am willing to camp out in the woods wherever we can find them until we have a plan.

Awsome. I am going to pretend to be mute and somewhat slow. Then maybe they will pitty me enough to let me by, I will use this line of defence only behind enemy lines if I am found without a bracelet. This is all coming together. MUAHAHAHAHAHA ha

Coventry residents voice their concert concerns - Aug. 3, 2004

By Carla Occaso

CORRESPONDENT

COVENTRY - A taste of things to come?

With the prospect of a crowd of 80,000 expected for the upcoming Phish concert, an informational hearing here Monday drew its own overflow crowd. Over 300 Coventry residents jammed the local school to express their concerns, including safety, vandalism, transportation, money and the lack of local input.

The information session with Vermont State Police and the promoters attracted about a third more people than expected, filling the Coventry Elementary School parking lot and forcing people to park along both sides of Route 5 for about a half-mile.

The concert, scheduled for Aug. 14 and 15 in Coventry, has divided the community between those who see it as an economic boon and those who fear a massive unruly crowd, which some worry could bring crime and traffic congestion.

They were told Monday to expect "the mother of all traffic jams," but not very much crime. Still, residents expressed a wide array of concerns.

"What about my pigs?" asked Coventry farmer Angela Young, who owns livestock on her property abutting the concert grounds. "Who is responsible if something happens to my pigs?"

Others were concerned by the fact that selectmen did not hold public meetings when deciding to allow the concert in town.

Selectman chairman Michael Marcotte explained in an interview that public input was not required because there are no bylaws against huge outside events. In fact, there are no zoning bylaws in town.

Meanwhile, many local businesses are expected gain financially from the concert.

The event is expected to bring $10 million to Orleans County, said Marcotte, who also owns a Newport convenience store and is running for state representative. Marcotte said he learned of the event in late February 2003 and has been working with state police to plan the meeting ever since.

Bill Stenger of the Jay Peak Ski Resort said 75 Phish organizers are staying at his facility. The resort will house 75-100 in all, he said.

Rep. Duncan Kilmartin, R-Newport, said he believes it will be a positive experience considering the careful planning of the state police and the department of public safety.

Locals sounded nervous, though.

State police officials did their best during the meeting to assure attendees that the 503 law enforcement and security officials on site during the concert would be able to keep control over the crowd, expected to reach 80,000 when Phish organizers, media, vendors and ticketed concert attendees are all added in.

A typical Phish concert is "the mother of all traffic jams," but Phish fans are not out to "terrorize" local residents, rather, they are there for the music, said State Police Maj. Jim Dimmick.

Concert-goers will be inside the venue by Saturday afternoon Aug. 14, and will not come out until the concert ends around midnight Sunday, said Dave Werlin, a concert promoter with Great Northeast Productions. Traffic is not expected to be one big jam all at once, Werlin said. Fans will stream in from Thursday afternoon until Saturday morning, Aug. 14, and leave in a steady stream from Sunday, Aug. 15 to the following Monday afternoon.

Arrests are expected to be minimal, and mostly for minor drug charges, Dimmick said. "We are not going to arrest everyone who has a joint. There is just no way to do it. We are going to have to be somewhat tolerant," he said.

Dimmick elicited ironic laughter when he apologized for not having enough information packets, saying he expected 175 people at the most, rather than the 300 who turned up.

To keep out unticketed concert attendees, state officials are putting up signs along the interstate telling those without tickets to stay home.

"We have a good plan," he said.

Coventry resident Rose Beaumont is tickled pink, saying she will be able to hear it from her back yard. "I think it is cool."

OK a little update as the time flies on by.. i've found myself (and a few friends who are coming as well) a few different options for rides... phone calls need to be made, different agreements set, but the plan proceeds - we are heading to vermont - leaving michigan around wednesday night. no tickets, unfortunately (and if anybody has extras please let me know!) but lots of bells beer, and we're hoping for a miracle.

anyway, hopefully it'll all work out!

Good luck to you. I am still without a ticket. There is a slight chance that I may get a last second opportunity to work it, but I can't rely on that yet. If i dont find a ticket you can believe I'll be doing the same thing you are. I can't remember who said it, but I saw someone say in a post, "If you're supposed to get in, you will." So there you go.
