I saw it in the theatre. I had fun, but I have mixed feelings about it. I talked to at least 5 people who were actually up in Vermont, but got turned away....I feel so bad for them.

From what I understand, they totally oversold it and were very un-prepared for the amount of people and the weather. I'm really glad I got to watch it in the comfort of a movie theatre, with nice seats and flushing toilets. It was a much more up close and personal view, instead of running around in the mud whacked out of my mind and dancing around like a crazyman I was able to see the band up close and really watch them play. The part that really makes me sad was that the second day Trey really looked like he was about to fall over and die. There was one point where he took off his guitar, and couldn't get it back on, he just kinda waved it around and tried to make it look cool (and it did look kinda cool I'll admit). Several times he just stood there rambling rather incoherently and scratching profusely. I'm kinda curious to hear some other people's opinions on it though, because I really wasn't in the clearest state of mind for day two.

I've heard the same thing 5 or 6 times now, about Trey, being intoxicated heavily. I thought he sounded funny a few times when I heard them last night but it could of been emotions. I heard Page was making wierd face's at him..

Did you see the show? They were all kind of making funny faces, you could see it in their eyes. He had to stop during the final song because he was playing the wrong key. By the end of the last set, I got the impression they were struggling to get through the show and get him off the stage.

I listened to Ghost and the 3rd set last night. The last song was butchered and he murdered Simple. Something was up, you're impression might not be far off... It was a very wierd ending.

Trey was very fucked up and it pissed off everyone in the theater. Everyone was yelling at the screen and making fun of him for being so intoxicated. Like the whole thing about him in a cabian that just showed how fucked up he was. I didn't like the song choices they picked. There was some good songs. BUT THEY DIDN'T FUCKING PLAY FLUFFHEAD!!!!
The first night was amazing but the second night I took shrooms for the first time and ended up becoming very uncomfortable and having to sit outside till I calmed down so I missed much of the music. But looking at the setlist I didn't really miss anything. I wish they did a gamehendge or something they haven't done in awhile. But ohwell Phish is over

it happened saturday night too rumblings about trey's drug problems, etc. he totally lost "stash" for example on saturday night seemed to get progressivly worse throughout the sets... i dunno what the deal was but it made me sad... any one who has been to the shows since right before the hiatus can tell you about the declining quality, though... i hope they can all get fresh starts on music now that phish is gone

How was Coventry you ask?... it wasn't.
I was one of th emany of thousands that did not get in even though i had a ticket.
Myself and my girlfriend drove up to get in line on I-91 at about 25 miles away from Exit 26 (the exit we needed to get off on) at about 4am friday morning.
From 4am friday morning til 2pm friday afternoon we moved about 10 miles.
2pm friday til 9am saturday we did not move at all. I was told in that time they were letting cars in at 150 an hour and that th eplace was washed out and the roads in were gone.
The whole time we kept seeing huge trucks driving with timber on them and beeping at out. I was told later they were bringing that in to rebuild the roads. But that didn't work so i heard and they closed the gates friday into saturday, the line didn't move at all. So from 2pm friday the line didn't move one bit until the announcement came saturday morning that those that arne' tin won't get in and the cops will be around to tell you how to get out.
I was 1 mile from Exit 26. When i turned around, the line of cars that stretched for nearly 20 miles behind me was gone and breaking up fast. A lot of people resolved to hike in, but even that didn't guarantee entry as the fields were so muddy they really didn' thave places to put people.
Mike Gordon said on the radio 92.1 FM or whatever it was that they looked at other places, and they were just too muddy too and that they were out of options and they were very sorry and owuld brainstorm a creative way to make it up to those that didn't get in.
THe papers were reporting about 60,000 people were there, but i'm not sure that many really go tin. When i left i heard the number was at 35k, i'm sure a lot more got in, but probably not 60k.
I simply couldn't leave my car and didn't have the means to carry all my stuff 13+ miles and perhaps not get in. Plus the cops were saying we couldn't though some left em anyway, but a lot of those left were even closer than i was so it was probably "more okay"
I resolved to drive into burlington and stay there for a few days. I wore my shroomery shirt around but didn't meet any shroomerites in burlington or in the line of cars. But i did meet a guy with a Bus. He said he was from virgiinia and was in a jam band called Zen.

and i heard trey was doing pretty sloppy especially 3rd set first night...my cousin said he was pretty wasted and was stumbling around and was almost falling over sometimes which isn't good. Trey is stupid for getting so fucked up, im not saying he shouldn't have fun but he totally went down hill and at your final shows if you are getting so fucked up you can't play decent, thats pretty stupid. But i still wish i were there.

so was page like full out crying in wading in a velvet sea? Cause i heard he couldn't get past like the 4th line. I kinda want to see that. I wish i was there. And i guess trey cried a little.
did anyone hear what mike said on "the bunny", i think thats what it was aired on, but i downloaded it and im not used to hearing him talk to much but he sounded sad or something. I wonder what they are doing since they said they are "brainstorming how they could make it up to the fans" and lots of people are praying for another show (which i HIGHLY doubt will happen), but i wonder what they will do if they only refund there money. Cause they said they will refund them but yeah.

that really sucks man, i would be SOO pissed off hiking so far and waiting SO long in still traffic and getting turned around. I woulda gone phycho right there and i don't know what i would have done but i probably woulnd't do anything smart...haha, i guess i over exagerated it a bit, but i would do my best to get in, from driving around to other places and walking, other entrances (i dont know how many there were) or even sneaking in, hell if you paid 150 for a ticket (some people paid MULTIPLE hundreds of dollars and got turned around...and they can't get refunded because they are obviously not the orignal buyers.

I was there... moved aboput 1.5 miles from 6:30 thursdfay night until 10 on saturday morning. I was one of the people who got turned away from parking, but nearly all tbose who were turned away decided to hike in. They didnt turn anyone away that walked, the only reason why they stopped letting people in was because the mud was so bad that cars were getting stuck and the tow trucks that came to pull them out got stuck too. I had to walk about 14 miles to the show with all my gear, but it was definatly worth it. It was amazing to see hopw well the 30,000 people who were turned away pulled together and found a way to make it. Alright, now ill talk about the music. Well, IMO, it was amazing. it was the first time i had ever cried at a concert, and i did it at multiple times. Truthfully, I dont give a shit about what people were saying about trey being too fucked up. If he wanted to be, then that was his perogative. It was their l;ast show and it was to honor them. I wass just there to give them the respect that they deserve and listen to what they w3anted to play. That show was definatly aqbout them and not about the fans.
YEM: Yeah, Page was crying a loit during WIAVS, but Trey broke down multiple times throughout the show (at the end of yem, during a few of his speeches,, during wolfmans, and he left the stage on sunday night balling and being held by mike). You could tell it was a real emotional time for the band, im sorry you didnt get to witness it.
Sorry if any of what i just said doesnt make sense, i hjusty woke up after the first sleep ive gotten in days, and im still really groggy.

I'll have to agree with Thunderbong about the convenience of the movie theatre versus the inconvenience of a huge muddy crowd surrounded by tens of thousands of people. The theatre view was great and you could actually see what as going on onstage.

well i thought it was fucking great... maybe the shows weren't the absolute best in phish's career, maybe they didn't bust out gamehedge or fluffhead (or even susy greenburg! ), but it was still simply great! i mean, after playing together for so long, and knowing this was their last show, i don't think you could expect the guys to just forget that and play a normal show... and from being there and pretty up-close, i wouldn't say trey (or anybody else) was all messed up on drugs, i think it was just the emotion of the whole thing...
and yeah, i waited in traffic for like 35 hours, and then walked 20 some miles to get there, but it was definitely worth it!

i couldn't really say... i personally was a bit out of my head during both nights, so wouldn't consider myself to be the best judge of trey's mental status... in my opinion, i would say that it was more the emotions of the night that caused the band to not be on the top of their game... but then again, it might have been massive doses of lsd!

Sadly, there was no LSD involved there. He was doped out of his mind. I can't imagine what it felt like to be his Mother watching that show. I think it was a fitting end for such an incredible band though. I imagine there was a day when Jerry looked just like that on stage.

I'm surpised though that there weren't any 2 song encores or that they didn't do a late night set like at previous festivals, oh well. I really wish i was there.

they really seemed to have planned it out - to end with The Curtain... the crowd stuck around, a little "Fluffhead" chant started up, but, as Trey said, the band felt that they had gone full circle, and it was time to end it...

i heard a number of people yelling fluffhead when my cousin called.
and i heard a chant of people yelling "PHISH! PHISH! PHISH!" for a little bit...i don't know if it was just by him, but it sounded like quite a bit of people were yelling it.
The Curtain is a cool song, and they had the With part which is cool.
My cousin really likes that song so that would be a great last song for him to see, i can't wait to hear his stories.

well we stopped in Burlington, picked up two tickets (had to pay 500 bucks for them, though ), and then cruised towards coventry. We picked up two more tickets in line on the highway, but they turned out to be fake! no matter, though... they didn't check tickets at all, and we all managed to find wristbands on the ground (except for one friend, who just walked in the big crowd and was never noticed)... the two real tickets we have we are gonna refund, to save a bit of cash from the fake ones we bought, so we ended up paying 150$ a ticket anyway, which is what they were selling them for!

It was totaly worth being there.even with all the shit i went thru. it was a real emotional time and im not one of those that complain about what they play or set high expectations.i jUST took in every note they played and enjoyed evrey second of it.except for trey fucking up a few times.and i didnt mind him being fucked up who knows if he had been able to play without being so high.Coventry for me was more like being there for them(phish) and sharing that experience with everyone.it was just a great but emotional time i saw one kid there spun out of his mind crying after they all got there turns to say something lots of people hugging ect.oh yea they had big screens set up they where showing the same feed they showed in the theatre.but i got pretty close anyway

i really wish icoulda been there. Even though i don't like it when trey is just really fucked up when he's playing, i don't care if hes fucked up, but when hes really fucked up it can really take away from him, in my opinion. But like you said you took it note for note and appreciated it for what it was, that's what i would have done. There are too many whiners about them not playing fluffhead, sure it woulda been cool, but they can't play every song that they used to, and you go to see them to see them play what they want and jam how they do, and this is how they play now...or did. But i really wish i coulda been there. I'm sure the shows were really cool and some really good jams, but i would have also really liked to experience the emotion there.

I made another post about my own Coventry experience, too lazy to insert link here.

All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake. -Erik Davis
