Thanks for the tip! And now I know they don't like the heat. I'll keep these things in mind as I make my journey again.

They don’t appreciate warmer temps. Sometimes I get away with letting them finish around 75f, but they usually abort on me past 73f. The majority of my sect. Zap species do best in the low-mid 60’s during the winter months. I don’t bother with Zapotecorum during the summer.

On getting them to fruit, you really don’t have to do much. I use standard shoeboxes and leave my tubs on the shelf like cubes until they consolidate & knot. Typically takes 2-3 weeks if the culture is healthy and surface conditions are good, but it will happen when they’re ready. I then case them and move them over to my tent.

The key to success with this species is consistency. Whatever you’re doing when pins arrive, keep doing it. Temps and conditions should remain the same from start to finish. Switch things up and they will abort. This one doesn’t recover once it decides to die. That’s where the challenge lies, imo.

Thanks MojaveMyc for your insights. This just makes me more eager to get to work.

Anyone know how long zap spores last? I have some old ones I swabbed on the 6th. I see zero growth on all 3 different petri dishes.

It depends on how they’re stored — they can remain active for years, or just for a few months.

All prints and swabs are always in my fridge. Never taken out unless I'm swabbing them. Then right back in the fridge they go. Seems like the life of zap spores aren't as long as others.

Edit: I spoke too soon. I have germination on 2 dishes!

So far, all my species have done well after a year in a deep freezer under vacuum 😎 It takes them a bit longer to germinate compared to fresh ones, but they’re all still alive. Theoretically, they could remain viable for decades. Time will show

You freeze the prints that have been vacuumed sealed? That works for you? If it works, I just might give that a go too.

I just checked my dishes. I have germination in 2 out of 3!

Yes, I do. But you need to make sure the spores are completely dry and vacuum-sealed so that no moisture forms in the packaging.

My Zaps (Texolo) colonised their substrate (~3:1 roughly following MicoZap's recipe with pasteurised coir, straw, sawdust, hpoo, verm, and cactus soil) very quickly.

12 days, and they look ready to case and fruit.  Very cool.

Hi!

Currently work with Aucklandie and Thaizapoteca. Trying to avoid any mistakes. Hope will do it this time. Playing with several isolated cultures from wild spores for about 1.5 years already ))))

^Looking forward to seeing what you show from them, Mico.
:paradisiscoolwhat:

Today I spawned some overdue Texolo, T2 of tissue sample from this fruit:

the myc:

Popocorn to 75/25 coir/HWFP.

And spawned a Vera Cruz/Tlalnelhuayocan germ plate I'd put to popcorn. The myc was a lot whispier on the VC, but looked ready to rip! I put it to 3 smaller tubs.

Can't believe it has only been around 1 month since my fungus gnatted Texolo tub, it feels a lot longer!
Really looking forward to seeing some ZAPS again- especially now that I've sampled them.

Does anyone have a good sub recipe that is just coir, HWFP, and verm? Just looking to pasteurize less poo to keep the wife happy.

I 'bucket tekked' coir & HWFP at 70:30 and 80:20 ratios on my few Zap grows.

Then just pseudo cased with a mix of medium & extra coarse verm once the surface was colonised. First grow got gnats so tossed after flush 1, rest are in progress/ fine so far, I have a Semp tub thats on 3rd flush with coir/HWFP bucket tekked and shows no ill signs.

I will try that on my semp tub. I don’t think the sub has been the problem for me, they run good for a month and then go bad. Pretty sure it’s my casing on semps. I’ll try the med/extra coarse verm casing next.

A bit too hot right now for Zapotecorum. unless you are running constantly AC or got chilly place in basement to let them fruit

I normally run them at +21 Celsius.
some shroomers say that is ok up to +24 Celsius but I haven’t tried at that high temp.
Good thing that you can keep them until temperature drop down to comfortable for fruiting

I will run them in my basement office. It stays between 20-23c year round in the room. I’m still a little ways off with them, just trying to get a plan for when they are ready.

I've had the best results keeping them in the casing container with the lid on and tiny holes (around 1 mm or 1/16") drilled throughout the lid, about 1.5 inches apart, until they start pinning. Then I move them to the fruiting chamber. They seem to prefer a stable environment with passive fresh air exchange rather than fans. They're also photosensitive and require light once they're moved to the fruiting chamber
