Re: Pholiotina cyanopus / Finland [Re: velho]

Pholiota cyanopus is just conocybe cyanopus right? Just different names?

Or are they a separate genus and species altogether?

Reclassified as pholiotina I believe,  same thing

Smithii and cyanopus only differ by spore size I think also or are very similar

Also the DNA barcodes are pretty different.  They have been reclassified as Pholiotina but Conocybe works too, the truth is that they are somewhere in between and probably deserve their own genus.

Nice finds philocybe! :toast:

After a few days of rain, my yard started fruiting again. A couple of pins and mature ones observed. :sunny:

Some samples are on their way to get analyzed, so hopefully we'll get the results this year aswell.

Quick question on some of these finds. Are there aspen cottonwood, or other tree species that spread by long runner roots? Just wondering because I dug around where some smithii grow and found some dead runners from cottonwood that were colonized by a similar looking mycelium, the other patch in my yard has black locust runners around it. Just wondering if that could be a good key for finding and cultivating them. Just to be clear I’m not hypothesizing that they are mycorrhizal, but that they may colonized dead roots underground

Yes, there are some aspens around nearby my finds. I don't think black locust trees occurs naturally in Finland.

A couple of late yard finds from last week.

I see a 5% difference in the ITS sequence between JX968157 and MG871468, so if those are correctly labeled they are definitely different species, or if not, there are two species in that group.  Another unique sequence in that group turned up in Indiana and is visible via https://mycomap.com/genetics/blast-search but is not in Genbank yet.

Yes, it would be nice to see if the mushrooms in this thread are identical to the MG871468 (my find).
If so, I guess we could rename the thread to Pholiotina smithii. I think it is.

Unfortunately the sequencing on both samples failed (sample 1 - ITS noisy, sample 2 - PCR failed). However, sample 1 (my yard finds) returned as 98.98% match with knarkkorvens Pholiotina smithii finds (MG871468).
My samples were about a year old, so I'll probably try again next year with fresh samples.
Thanks Matias for the help!

Well, the fail is noisy but it's not bad. Enough to pass the message.

My find from 13 years ago for reference
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14895064/fpart/4/vc/1

Looks like this when I run it through BLAST today. The top one is my find. The most identical at 99,38% was found in the state of New York.
Back when I found it, no others was that close.
Do you think yours will show up in the database eventually, or perhaps it won't be entered because of the noisy quality?

Looks like it’s recognized as Conocybula now. Make a lot of sense to me

Cool! So it finally happened.
Found a paper about it.

Yea I guess even if the results were noisy, ~99% match is close enough and atleast the yard specimens could be Conocybula smithii then. I'm going to repeat the sequencing next year, but as far as I know there are no confirmed Co. smithii finds from Finland. Pretty cool!

Conocybula sect. cyanopodae

So, the Conocybula is closer related to the Conocybe and Bolbitius than Pholiotina.

Also a new good key and descriptions from page 17 in the pdf.

And mine was the first confirmed from Sweden.

Conocybula smithii / Finland [Re: knarkkorven] * 1
    #29262474 -

The season has begun in here. Probably has been on for a couple of weeks, but I've been lazy. Anyway, visited the habitat today and observed a few specimen and also the roadside was fruiting. Only a couple of hasty and failed photos - I think it's time to upgrade my phone as the lens has gotten too scratchy to focus on these tiny things. But cool to see they're out there. :sunny:

I've renamed this thread to "Conocybula smithii / Finland" for now because even thought the last year sequencing failed, it was still a 98.98% match with knarkkorven's Conocybula smithii finds from Sweden. I will probably repeat the sequencing later this year.

Good luck, I hope you'll find them! I'll try to get more photos soon for sure!

Yea it's pretty cool that these are not some random rare encounters anymore. The habitats I find them seem to fruit pretty consistently year after year. Ofcourse there's a still a bit more work to do about cracking the code, but hopefully we'll get there. :pipesmoke:
