Hot Lemonade Maple Honey Ginger Cacti Tea
    #29590788 -

Im on a quest to improve the taste of the awful Cacti Tea taste. After a failed chocolate cacti powder attempt (i just could not eat it), I am revisiting the Hot Lemonade Maple Honey Ginger Cacti Tea concept, with the knowledge of culinary arts.

Ingredients:

Spring water
Fresh Lemons
Fresh or Powder Ginger
Real Maple Syrup
Top-Shelf Honey
Powdered Cacti skin

Tools:

Knife
Lemon juicer
1 Pint Glass Jars
1 Half Gallon Jar
Coffee Filters
Small Boiling Pot with lid
Measuring Cup

Process:

Put Powdered Cacti Skin, pre-weighed, in a Pint jar using a hot-water set-up with the small boiling pot or directly inside the small boiling pot with about 16 fl oz of spring water. Boil powder in the spring for about an hour or more. Make sure water level does not go too low. Add water as necessary to try to get to the same level as the initial 16 fl oz. Strain the water using an empty 1 Pint Glass Jar or 1 Half Gallon Jar and Coffee Filters. After the hot water extract is fully filtered, remove the coffee filters from the top lid and place lid on jar as a temporary cover. While the cacti water is still hot, cut a lemon and quickly juice it. Add the fresh lemon juice to the still-hot cacti water. Also add real maple syrup (1-2 Tablespoons), good honey (1-2 Tablespoons) and fresh or powdered ginger. Cover 1 Pint jar with the lid and sealing band and gently mix the jar by inverting it. Do this for like 5-10mins.

Finally, drink the Hot Lemonade Maple Honey Cacti Tea while its still hot. Reheat in a jar in a hot-water bath as needed.

Anyone tried this type of Hot Lemonade Cacti Tea before? Did it make the cacti water taste any better?

If you can find any way of masking that taste I'm all ears.

I can't even cook it without gagging anymore.

I really love to trip on cactus, but just can't stomach it. The last time I did I made a tar. Even the volume of tar was hard to take with the amount juice and tar balls I had to consume.
And this trip took nearly 12 hours to start. I woke in the morning ate the tar, and felt a little stoned throughout the day, by the afternoon I thought it had been a fail. We were sitting down for dinner around 630 in the evening and then I thought, oh.. here it comes, and proceeded to have one of the biggest hardest trips of my life right through the night.

It was so weird that it took that long to digest that I don't think I'll do that again due to it being so unpredictable. I also had quite bad nausea as well.

I would like to one day attempt a proper cielo extraction

Bitter is one point on the 5 pointed star of easily recognized taste sensations. If you add the others and create the full star with the other 4; salty, sweet, umami and sour, it is more likely to be palatable. You've triangle going now unless the cacti has some umami going on. I'd add something that was salty umami like powdered sea moss to balance.

I'd add the sea moss to one ounce of the batch and if that didn't taste good, I'd try some other salty umami flavors. Beef broth, fish sauce, soy sauce.

Good idea! I never thought to add the full spectrum of flavors to help mask the bitterness. Excellent!

M44, I will! I am planning on trying this recipe later this month for a camping music festival. I think Im gonna bring some umami flavors as well, as I do love shoyu (low sodium) and Braggs Liquid Aminos, adding them might help balance the overall taste of this concoction :strokebeard:

I just did some research and apparently fat helps mask bitter tastes. So Im gonna try add some milk creamer or coconut milk as well, treat the tea like black coffee.

In a flash of insight, I have some new exciting ideas!

I think I might just scrap the whole Lemon Juice usage. I personally think cacti mixed with lemon juice is one of the worst combos. Because of this theory, I am going to try something else. These new ideas come from directly from Mixology 🍹

Limeade Maple Honey Coconut Cacti Tea

Ingredients:

Lime Juice
Filtered Spring Water
Maple Syrup
Local Honey
Coconut Milk
Fresh Mint (optional)
Powdered Cacti Skin

Process:

Same process as the original tea, except Lime Juice will be used instead. It has a similar pH as Lemon juice and should work just find for extracting the alkaloids from the Powdered Cacti. I havent decided if its better to use just pure Lime Juice or to mix it with water. However, since the Lemon Tek uses pure Lemon juice, perhaps using 100% Lime juice is the best method.

Use about 12-14 fl oz of Pure Lime Juice (or 50/50 Lime Juice-Spring Water) with 100 grams of Powdered Cacti Skin. Boil/Hot Water Bath the mixture in a pot/jar for at least an hour. While hot, filter the mixture with coffee filters. Right after filtering, add Maple Syrup Local Honey, and Coconut Milk. Optional, add fresh mint as well (Mojito). Mix well.

And heres my favorite drink idea yet!

San Pedro Pina Colada

Ingredients:

Pineapple Juice
Filtered Spring Water
Maple Syrup
Local Honey
Coconut Milk
Powdered Cacti Skin

Process:

Same process as above but with Pineapple juice instead of Lime Juice.

This Tropical drink could be used with other juices as well! Like Guava, Grape or Apple. And could even be mixed together for the hot extraction process. Ive even considered using hard alcohols like tequila to help in the extraction process. But for now, Im going to keep it as pure as possible to just a mescaline experience.

I even have some Soup ideas! I was looking at a list online of various acidic juices and tomato juice was on there. So why not a Tomato Soup made with Cacti Powder!

Cacti Powder Tomato Soup

Ingredients:

Tomato Juice
Tomato sauce
Fresh Herbs like Basil, Spinach, and Rosemary
Garlic Bread

Process:

Same process as the original tea, except Tomato Juice will be used instead. With the boiled tomato juice extract mixture, filter then continue making the soup with fresh herbs in a pot. Eat with toasted garlic bread. This could even be used for spaghetti!

Last but certainly not least! Miso Soup.

While looking up acidic soups, I found out that the Japanese favorite, Miso Soup, is also acidic! Ive never made Miso Soup but from what Ive seen, its pretty easy to make.

Cacti Miso Soup

https://www.justonecookbook.com/homemade-miso-soup/

Process: Add cacti powder to the Dashi (Japanese soup stock) making step and boil according to the recipe. Before adding the Miso paste, filter the Dashi using coffee filters.

Whats great about the Miso Soup idea is the umami flavor is already a natural part of the soup, so it should help with masking the cacti taste. So this might be the best-tasting. However, the drawback here is that Im not sure how acidic the Dashi stock will be. There might be less extraction potential using this method, with the trade-off being likely a better tasting SP recipe.

Lots of great choices Ive discoverd! I might just make a full extracted cacti meal with a drink and a soup
