Oh, is that what zen meditation is? I've been doing that since I've had memories. Staring at walls (or whatever) and bathing in thoughts as they wash over me.

As far as anything sound based for this - I am a sound guy. In every conceivable way. What I hear does far more to steer me than what all my other senses combined can take in. I can contemplate living with blindness, but if I were to go deaf I'd almost certainly end it. Deafness, for me, would be the complete removal from my comfort zone. I would be fascinated with blindness but deafness would leave me wanting (and praying) for death.

Well the point is to disengage from the thoughts as soon as you notice that you're paying attention to them, I've done zen meditation outside a couple times and it's a big challenge for me. Though the usual practice is carried out inside in front of a wall, and it seems like a good idea to limit the outside interferences. There's a formal guide here if you're interested in making this a regular practice.

As far as sounds go, I like om chanting because it originates from the body and gives you so much to focus on, from the vibrations originating in the chest and moving up to the mouth, to trying to keep the timing the same for all 3 syllables, to making sure that you move your jaw seamlessly so the sounds come out evenly spaced. You could spend a lifetime looking for the perfect om within you. What worked for me was starting off with 10-20 reps of om chanting, followed by ajna chakra meditation as I was able to feel the sensation easily and that provided an anchor to the meditation for me.

For outside sounds there are many play along bowl meditations on youtube, if you find it easier to focus on external sounds these should provide plenty of stimuli to pay attention to. This guide can give you a framework to get you going.

If it's in your heart and you are compelled don't think just do. Shroomery doesn't need an explanation and it's seen much stranger things.

Once upon a time in my consciousness studies I used an auditory recording to try to reach an out of body experience. At the time, it was a program of 6 or 8 tapes and it wasn't cheap.
I tried for several years and always failed because I would fall asleep during the first tape. Eventually I threw them away.
But what I'm saying is, there could be an auditory solution for you.

Yeah it's thinking non-thinking.  Kinda hard to describe.  But learning not to identify with thoughts.  They can get kind of wild when they're let go.  Bubbling up in voices other than the internal narrator.

Anyway this is a listening meditation that I enjoy followed by a dharma talk.  From a former Zen nun.  Part of it is listening to thoughts with equanimity.



I also like body scans for falling asleep.  Just ignore the instructions where he says don't fall asleep :lol:

I confess, my rocking days are mostly behind me :lol:

I'll probably keep doing small doses of them to get my habits back on track.  And plan a larger dose out where I can lay on the floor for awhile once my body feels more comfortable.

I really like these ones :smile:  I like growing them, looking at them, photographing them.  And enjoyed eating them too!  Felt like they were helpful in looking at my habit energy with compassion too.
