Confession - I've been a ball of nerves for the past 24 hours, rotator cuff surgery is scheduled for 7am tomorrow. Didn't sleep any last night, and probably won't tonight either. 6-8 weeks of recovery (i.e. not having a right arm) is daunting to say the least, but I'd probably go on a one handed tri-state murder spree if this didn't get fixed soon. Hell, I would have already been on a digital bitch-slapping spree around here if the technology existed.

I'm right there with ya, I just had major knee surgery 5 days ago. Shit fucks with you! I've been sitting upright in bed every since bc I gotta keep my leg straight, even when sleeping, and will be that way for another 6 days at least.

I've got a long recovery process, too. It's a chore, but it is much easier than dealing with a shit joint for the rest of my days.

I'm sure everything will go well, it'll just be a nuisance for a while. Hopefully this fixes you up and you can wave your middle finger sky high!

Do your part! You got this.

Yes, speedy recovery to both of you!

Klarn, if digital bitch slapping ever becomes a thing, I'm probably against it just because, but anyway please slap me cheeks and make me rosy.

I'm feeling the anti-tech vibes... I'm the most technophobic IT guy you'll ever meet. Left social media a while ago, and have never used android auto in any of my newer vehicles because I refuse to sign on for a set of Ts and Cs just to get my phone screen on my car radio screen. My bosses know this about me, yet they still let me keep my job. I guess being likable and polite has gotten me further in life than I expected (just like my mom said it would).

Give me about 24-36 hours there bud. 2x a week PT is coming soon, but so is some *ahem* medicinal ketamine. My dedication to following through on the exercises is real, PT is the only reason I'm able to walk after a hospitalization a few years ago.

I live in a city with no community and no purpose.
I was just listening to a podcast with Prof. Jiang and he said something that weirdly gave me so much comfort.
'I think we live in hell' and he goes on to talk about the afterlife and it makes so much sense to me.
I think this world is training wheels for the next life with God and it will be forever and full of love.
This idea allows me to relax and not take this life so seriously anymore.

I do, but I'll be honest... practicing wiping my ass left-handed has me worried. I already have much trouble sleeping, so part of my brain sees what's to come as the descent into madness that kills us all.

But most likely I'll be high as bat dick, jousting windmills from my couch while I enjoy a solid week off work. Official "fuck off, ask India team" email went out at lunchtime today. Fine snootables to be procured soon.

I am not able to visualize the afterlife in any capacity other than meeting God and knowing it knows me completely.

So I found this in a customer garage and it reminded me of someone...

Same procedure I'm having! Hey, do they put something in that makes my brain shut up? Because that's why I don't sleep. The shoulder pain doesn't help, but got damn somebody give me the secret to the temporary lobotomy that will allow me to fall asleep at night instead of at my desk and behind the wheel every day.

For me, it comes down to breathing. You can't fall asleep with rapid, shallow breathing. If I find myself not sleeping, I find myself with rapid, shallow breath. Concentrate on the long, deep breaths.

All I can offer is meditation which helped me a lot, and I'm not doing currently, but I feel on the cusp of starting a regular practice again. I tend to fall asleep and wake up 20-30 mins later with some anxiety, and when I was meditating consistently that went away completely.

As LadysKnight said, the breath can help. I like doing 4 seconds inhale, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds exhale, 4 seconds hold.

That's basically my only go-to, deep breaths, meditate on the breathing, become the breath... I can do that just fine, but it never makes my brain shut the fuck up. All the meditative breathing in the world is still pushed aside by 200 ongoing, meaningless conversations, plus at least 43 different songs playing on repeat, plus the mental consternation caused by my ability to observe all these things at once and still have some need to track and contemplate them all.

Eventually my brain gets so exhausted that it just shuts down completely (around 4-5am local time at the earliest). Thankfully, it usually leaves the lizard brain on so I don't die from not breathing or something.

Still not sure why I haven't solved this issue with the Louisville Slugger that lives by my side of the bed...

Sounds like a much worse version of what I have, not sure if you've tried many options but there are so many types of meditation, maybe one of the more focused types where you try to hone in on one sensation can click for you so you can drop off the constant influx of thoughts.

Techniques like ajna chakra/third eye meditation, om chanting, sound meditation with bowls.

Or something that seems counter intuitive but could end up working, like rotating sound awareness where you move your focus to every distict sound in your environment, or straight up zen meditation where you just sit and stare at a wall, practicing letting the constant thoughts pass without engaging them.

There's no straight cut answer but if you try many different things, you're bound to find something that works at least a little bit so you can get a foothold and work on expanding it. The downside is that it's probably not going to be an instant solution, but if you have to deal with this every night, it's worth it to try all sorts of techniques.
