Listen up dudes. Do not let your wives girlfriends or fuck buddies have ALL the fun.

Get in touch with yourself for real.
If you know. then you know..and if you don't. what the hell are you waiting for!?.

It's even more fun; if you have somebody to share the experience with.

I'd find 18 inches a tiny bit short for some things (inoculating bags especially). Any reason you're set on a classic flow hood design? Seems like the Chinese FFUs get the job done for cheaper. I bought a 22x22 inch one for $525 before tax. That model is now $295 on Amazon. I love that thing.

Because I watched this video

. And I just figured.if had a choice true laminarbflow would be best. And allow me to be able to work on all the areas without any worries.

But maybe its not that important?

I definitely wouldn't mind saving money.

And I could definitely use the space that would be saved by an ffu.

Basically all my boxes are checked for an ffu besides the fact that it's not true lmf(does it matters that much?)

Cuz  I do have the money to spend and I'm willing to pay for it if it does.

I wouldn't mind getting into doing bags though. So it's definitely something to consider as well.

Can you link the one you have?

Updated Fan Filter Unit... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0936Q63G5

To be clear, I haven't done a smoke test or anything to prove to myself it has true laminar flow. But it doesn't contaminate my plates or bags, and I've poured and used hundreds of plates (maybe a thousand by now), a ton of jars, hundreds of smash wedge baggies, and maybe 60 supplemented sawdust bags since I got it. Haven't had contamination I couldn't track down to dirty swabs or failed jar filters, or the occasional finger through the plate when I forgot to lid it before lifting...

Have you checked out the FFU thread?

G'day guys and gals!

I've been pondering over a flowhood...
At what point would you guys say it becomes a necessity? An SAB of decent enough size has done the trick wonderfully thus far, I'm just wondering how I justify the purchase to my frugal side ya know?

That Bonsai is a tasty bit o' kit though...

A necessity? Probably never (though I can't imagine  enjoying inoculating supplemented sawdust bags in a SAB).

But if you're looking for justification: sterile laminar flow is like easy mode for aseptic work. Easier to see, more working space, way easier to keep your hands in a safe place relative to the open work. You can leave lids off kind of indefinitely. You just have to learn to avoid putting nonsterile things like hands between the filter face and the open plate/jar/bag/etc. You can get away with hovering above stuff for quite a lot longer than in a SAB, as long as your hands are basically clean (not dropping liquid or larger particles that can't be blown away by the sterile air current).

Definitely not required for growing a lot of mushrooms. But unlocking bags can be huge (especially for gourmets, even at low volume), and I think it's hard to overstate how much more ergonomic the FFU is compared to a still air box. It's just a question if how much those benefits are worth to you.

I confess, I feel badly expressing my love for the FFU, knowing some people who would be served just as well by a large plastic tote, may feel an urge to buy one. To anyone just starting out and feeling that urge, I would recommend sticking with a still air box at least until you are pretty sure you want to keep doing this and you (want to) spend enough time doing sterile work that an improvement there would actually be meaningful to you. Hone sterile work in a SAB, don't buy an FFU thinking it will fix your sterility problems. Generally it won't if you can't apply sterile technique. FFUs just have easier techniques.

And the techniques don't necessarily lap over each other. SAB technique is way different than LFH technique for the most part.

I confess, I "caved" and bought this unit last week. I just started using it and LOVE the improved ergonomics and visibility. I also do not yet have dedicated lab space (really working on that) and it's so nice to put the FFU on a countertop and just dive in, vs. setting up the SAB and letting everything settle for a good long bit before getting to work. I still work in small batches, so the time-economy quotient feels better to me too.

Now, I also LOVE my SAB, and looking at it objectively, I probably went to a FFU way too early as a noob. After spending a lot of days and weeks pouring plates and making transfers and generally trying to dial in the basics of sterile work in my SAB first, the principles of sterile technique are now pretty solid muscle memory and I'm sure will continue to serve me well in whatever sterile environment I'm working in.

I agree that the FFU is like turning on "easy mode" - or at least "easier mode", and given my currently INSANE work schedule I'll take any assist I can get. 🤦‍♂️

The main reason I like my flowood over a still airbox is because I'm a little claustrophobic.

Outside of that I don't think you really ever need one unless you're doing bags.  And then I would recommend 24" x 24" minimum.

The one I built is 24" x 12".  And I like it for pans because it doesn't have turbulence.  But I also have a 24" x 24" ffu in the basement I will pull out if I ever get back into indoor edibles (or to clean the air for my mom on oxygen if we have wildfire smoke again next year).

Guys I need help. I sent out a bunch of requests and trades a couple weeks back and all the mail got batched up because of my location causing large delays.

Anyways I got 3 letters and I can only figure out who two were from. I have checked my emails, PMs, searches USPS tracking numbers all that... They gave me 4 prints from CO and I can't figure out who to leave trade rating and thanks.

Looked through marketplace for a giveaway thread too and idk

Am I overlooking something here?

I saw a similar article a couple of months ago. But yeah mycelium has senses.  Sight, smell, somatic and gravitational awareness.  Cellular communication through electrolytes.  They're not likely aware that they're aware, as that's a special sense (i.e. self awareness)

But it also has intention.  Which is to colonize and reproduce.

Which is kinda scary in the hands of the colonial MIC.

So as much as I love these organisms, I get Terminator vibes for sure.

A copy of a human brain.  If I was uploaded I would still experience death.

But a robot copy of me could continue researching and growing mushrooms 🤔

Hope they make cute robot outfits for robot twin me, or she's going to be miserable.
