    #2936636 - 07/28/04 04:23 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

some people like to use email clients like thunderbird or outlook to access their email. i don't get it. what's the point of using one of these programs?

Dedicated e-mail clients usually have more features than web-based ones. They offer powerful filtering, message searching, contact management and customizability which you can't really get on the web. At least that's why I use one.

If you dont have any use for an email client then the web based one is better for you.

it makes things incredibly easy. your email is automatically downloaded & you can easily send an email in 2 clicks - no need to go to some webpage & log in. your email comes directly to you without any work on your part - you'll get an instant notice (usually a fading eyepop + a sound) of new emails. there are also more options - spam filters, the ability to turn off html in emails, etc.

thunderbird rules. OE sucks.

i like both. as long as the web based client is a good open source php client and not something like yahoo or hotmail. i use ximian evolution outlook and horde. horde is a awsome web based php client and most webhosts will install it for you no problem

oh, yeah - forgot an obvious reason to use a client...they are great if you have multiple email addresses - I personally have 4 email addresses for work and personal. a client makes it easy to manage all email addresses instead of having to log in on a site for each one...

Principally, you would use an e-mail client to access ISP based e-mail. (using pop3 and SMTP protocols to receive and send, respectively) Because you're already paying for your ISP-based e-mail, so you might as well use it. There is a big difference between ISP-based e-mail and web-based e-mail. Plus, if you're careful about whom you give it out to and you have a client that has good spam filters, it can be pretty spam-free. As an aside, I wouldn't use Outlook express - Thunderbird is far superior to it in many ways.
