Best email program?
    #7920076 - 01/23/08 02:27 PM (16 years, 9 days ago)

I am getting tons of junk email daily even after changing my email address twice. I am getting sick of the tedious, daily process of deleting it. I don't even give out my email address and somehow I still have a box full of junk.

Can someone recommend a good email program with killer spam prevention?

Is Mozilla Thunderbird any good?

I just use Gmail. I'm sure there is a way of transferring over other emails to gmail account. They have a great spam filter.

I use g-mail w/ Google Apps - it allows you to use GMail with your own domain name that you own, it's pretty cool stuff. Lets you take advantage of GMail's awesome spam filtering and web client and still use your own domain, free of course.

If you are dead set on a desktop app. Thunderbird is good, but I use Mac Mail sometimes also.

gmail is also bad ass because your email's back and forth
from a person are containted in one 'chat' so there aren't
thousands of emails in your inbox. you just open the one email
and you can read everything that was sent back and forth.

I am getting tons of junk email daily even after changing my email address twice. I am getting sick of the tedious, daily process of deleting it.

This will never go away. Lemme explain why.

Spam works. As long as people keep buying spammed products, the profit motive will exist. The world will always be full of losers who respond to spam selling dick enlargement pills and women-seducing pheromone sprays. It's a fact of life.

And even if you change your email address, the minute you start giving the new address to your friends, you run the risk that one of them has a virus-infected machine. As soon as they receive your first email or send you their first email, the drone running in their system will harvest the new address and send it to the spammer who is in control of that machine. From there it will make its way into commercially sold spam lists and the genie is out of the bottle.

This cycle repeats every time you change your address. Anti-spam software, no matter how good, will always let some through you don't want and filter out some you do want. This means that you STILL have to waste time sifting through the junk box periodically to make sure you don't lose something important.

This will end (probably won't) when operating systems are designed the way safety-critical software, like the software that runs airliners or medical instruments, is designed.

By law, in that paradigm, EVERY line of code has at least one test, usually many tests. For example, an "if" statement hast at least two tests to test both possible logic paths. A compound "if" statement like "if a and b or c" has at least seven separate tests. One for "a and b and c", another for "a and b not c", another for "a not b and c" and so on until all permutations have one or usually more tests. There are even sophisticated software tools that analyse source code and produce a list of all the points that must be tested to comply with government regulations. And the engineering teams, again by law, cannot report to the same manager or work together. This is called "independence" in the safety-critical software lingo.

When I used to develop software that ran airliner avionics, we used to spend a year testing the code that took a month to develop. It's VERY expensive, but it produces ABSOLUTELY PERFECT software. An airliner crashing because someone forgot a "not" symbol somewhere in 10 million lines of code is totally unacceptable so no matter the cost, the software must be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT right out of the box. This is one reason why, when you're inside one of those aluminum tubes flying at 30,000 feet, you are in one of the safest places on the entire planet.

Anyway, I'm stoned and talking too much so long story short, spam will never go away until real legislation is passed that hurts spammers and their customers or another project like Blue Frog but with a distributed database is implemented by the internet community. So far, there doesn't seem to be much interest in doing that, though the Okopipi Project is making very slow progress toward that end.

Are you sure there isn't any real mail in the gmail spam folder? You'll have to spend time sifting through it one way or another. Either you do it on the front end when the spam comes into your in box or you do it on the back end once a week when you scan the spam box to make sure there isn't something important there.

i have thirteen messages in the spam folder,
but they were placed there by me.
and they were all from the same sender,
and its not really spam, just a company
that i used to work for.
seriously, gmail is the best.

Ill second that. I use gmail, and have 41 pieces of spam. I have been using gmail for about a year. I just looked in the spam folder and found no real mail.

I effectively never get spam.

Back when I used my isp's email, I would get a few pieces of spam every day.

another cool thing with gmail:
you can star important emails so they are easy to find,
which sounds kinda basic but it really helps.
i think it has unlimited storage and you can
send big attachments as well.

I worked for a small company that hosted MX servers. Basically a service similar to Postini, we filtered spam and relayed the mail onto a customers exchange or other mail server, acting as in between to the outside world.

We got very good at spam filtering, we had about 7 layers of anti-spam techniques, content filtering being at the very end. was an interesting thing to develop. We also employed Greylisting, kind of controversial, but very effective.

The google people do a very good job at spam filtering with gmail also. I never see it.
