So if they crossed a bridge away from those norms and precedent. Then they burned that bridge by installing a bunch of people that would always stay loyal to Trump and never go back to the way things were before if they were allowed to continue to go down this path.

I would say that is the destruction of norms and precedent and not just going away from them. So you are still down playing this.
In my opinion.

Now I agree my rhetoric was a little extreme. But I feel like I was overplaying what he could get away with potentially. The extreme is what we need to avoid the most. I feel like things are getting progressively more extreme.

Would you agree?

This is a temporary thing.  This is not fundamentally changing the way our system is structured.  If moves are made that do that, then I will be the first to point it out.  Much of what trump has done will have no legal effect at all, like trying to end birthright citizenship.  What he's accomplishing is a mass-disruption of the system...not an alteration of it.

Pardon me for hopping in here nearly 40,000 replies in :lol:.... But I tend to agree.  If Trump wanted to enact durable change, he would have worked with his congressional constituents to pass legislation toward that effect.  By attempting to implement everything via executive order, much of it will not only end up hamstrung in the courts, but whatever might get pushed through can be reversed as easily as it was enacted by the next administration.

Which isn't to say the guy can't do a lot of damage and make a big mess in the interim.  And there is still a non-zero chance of him trying to pull a legit and bona fide coup.  Ideally, our system of government will be up to defend itself against the most terrible of scenarios.  Nevertheless, it seems pretty clear we're in for an ugly and uncertain few years.

I’m surprised he hasn’t tried to pass anything yet.
I’m also concerned this is why people keep bringing up his third term.

Trump just wants to keep his ass out of jail. and live out the last of his days kicking back as king of the greatest country. the real leaders are the billionaires and CEOs letting him sit in that chair. don't get sidetracked.

How though? He fired the generals and is installing loyalists, the DOJ and FBI are now run by Qanon people. Even if the supreme court miraculously rules to keep him in check, I don't see any scenario where he abides. No one can make him, and he's well aware of it... it's kinda the basis for project 2025 and why he chose a VP who has openly fantasized about ignoring the supreme court in this exact scenario for years.

Yeah, I see the real and present threat.  But I also have to acknowledge that government and all of its arms are still comprised of real human beings.  If, for example, Trump attempted to use the military to actively control the people of this country, I just plain think a lot of the military wouldn't be interested in complying in such an egregious act.

Somewhat similarly to how many arms of government explicitly instructed their people not to respond to Musk's "5 things you did last week or you're fired" inquisition.  Or how folks in the department of justice would rather resign than attempt to enforce outlandish directives (although I will admit, good people resigning from their posts may allow less honorable folk to take up said post, and in turn shift that balance of power, which is a problem).  And of course the courts.  Judges are generally pretty solid people, and I believe that there are a lot of them out there that will not let political interests influence them to the extent that they are willing to turn a blind eye to inappropriate actions.

I'm not saying that there isn't reason for concern, or that anyone should be hesitant to express their concerns openly... quite the opposite!  The aggregate voice of the public must be loud and heard in efforts to help dissuade normalization of authoritarian abuse in our system.  Four years, it's enough time for some real damage to be sure, but I think the system has a good chance of holding out.  Maybe not though, after all, the record of failure in historical human government more or less assures eventual destruction.
