Yes metals. You use aluminum foil? You have acidic water, or add vinegar to your PC?

I use aluminum foil on the lids. And the pressure cooker is, of course, aluminum as well. Though as far as I could tell, the affected parts of the bottle weren't touching any aluminum.

I didn't know aluminum could dissolve at a low temperature. I'm intrigued now

Edit: and no vinegar, and I wasn't aware of any above normal acidity in our water

All tap water has dissolved minerals in it, mostly calcium, not your aluminum melting. You add some vinegar to the water to help the steam be more acidic so it can dissolve any deposits that might form.

I don't think that's what Roscoe or Nichrome were talking about.

Is it important to pack down the bulk spawn substrate or whatever it's called? What happens if you don't pack it down?

You can say "Is that all" But getting side pins can drastically reduce yield. You want an even canopy, but if side pins start to form most of the mush will try to grow there.

When you spawned them, why didn’t you put the casing layer on then?

I didn't know you were supposed to case when you spawned them. I did put a top layer when I spawned them.

Should I put the plate In the mycofridge to stop the growth?
Wanted to let the plate grow out first…
What would you do?

Dissolved elements. Look at the periodic table. Positive and negatively charged elements creates an electrical current. Same charge repels, opposite attracts. Put them in any aqueous solution and you have a battery. The elements deposit similar to the way a battery poops out. Look at a  battery you’ve left in a device for so long it’s failed and there are deposits in the battery pack.
Science!
Deionized, distilled, filtered, tap water all have different quantities of mineral content. I can chew my well water because of the mineral content.

What are you planning to do with the plate?

If you will use it to inoculate grain, may as well let it grow out. If you're worried about that pin dropping spores, just pluck it with flamed tweezers (or cut it out with a scalpel).

If you just wanted a clean culture to transfer from, you've got it now.

Since you use so little, some people use distilled water in their sterilizer, so that they don't create any buildup or have to worry about vinegar except as a periodic clean.
