Virus
    #2728317 - 05/25/04 03:21 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

My computer has a virus called W32.Beagle.J@mm. I downloaded the software that's supposed to delete it, ran it, and rebooted my computer, and ran it again just like the instructions said, and it says it got rid of it. But the Norton Anti-Virus Window keeps popping up. What gives?

It may have just quarantined it, and NAV is picking that up. Also, it could be detecting a registry entry the virus made that wasn't deleted.

Ok, then. How do I fix this?

According to Symantec, the W32.Beagle.J@mm. "
Adds the value: "ssate.exe"="%System%\irun4.exe"

to the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

so that W32.Beagle.J@mm runs when you start Windows"

So I imagine you just run regedit and delete that key. Just be careful and delete ONLY that key, though!

Hope that works!

Ya, it said that already. Unfortunately, I can't find that key.

I'm at a loss then. As I don't use NAV, I don't know what it could be, then. Obviously the virus has been detected and deleted, so at least you don't have to worry about that. I would suggest getting ahold of the Symantec tech support and/or seeing if this issue is mentioned in one of their forums.

I'm beginning to seriously doubt that. It seems to be a self-replicating virus, creating more and more temp files infected with it.

Ok, I ran the program again and it seems to have worked this time. Thanks anyway.

aside from being a resource hog and nearly impossible to uninstall, NAV is just flakey like that sometimes.

Id HIGHLY recomend AVG for all of you... I had norton for ages... one day a virus knocked out norton before it could update... i thought i had lost everything due to the sporatic behavior of my computer, and everything got fucked up real  quick as soon as norton went down. I installed AVG, and it took care of the problem IMEDIATLY!

I've got downloader.clisser.A virus right now, and AVG won't/can't get rid of it. It's infected Telnet.exe.. I've done symantec's online scan, it didn't find it. and only one little girl site has any info on this Clisser.

I'm going to boot to dos, run my avg in there and then if that doesnt work, I'll be back for some opinions.

Now I know why I run Linux...no viruses (well almost).
