Help ID a non-active found under a tree
    #2864473 - 07/07/04 10:27 AM (19 years, 7 months ago)

No idea what this is. Didn't disturb it, just snapped a couple pics.
Found in sandy soil under a tree in the Piney Woods of East Texas. High humidity, Daytime temps in high 80's-low 90's, low 70's at night. Lots of recent rainfall.
Any ideas on ID?

That is a Strobilomyces, probably S. floccopus, also known as a Pine Cone Fungus. There are a couple very similar species that are difficult to distinguish without a microscope, but S. floccopus is the most common and likely.

They are all edible, although not popular.

Nice photos.

Happy mushrooming!

I love these mushrooms. They are so attractive. I've found one only once, in the catskills. Nice photos!
