...What was your reasoning behind adding grasseed to the substrate?...

I added rye grass seed to get a shakeable substrate.
Since tropicalis grows on birdseed, it should also grow on grass seed.
So I didn?t just add vermiculite but also the grass seed.

One more question: You mention "dried composted" dung bought at a garden center. Is this in the US? If so, what brand was it that you bought. I don't think I've ever seen such a thing advertised, in a garden center, or anywhere else.

No, I live in Austria.
It says on the packaging, that it?s just pure composted cow dung without straw imported from Hungary.
It doesn?t smell much, like soil and it looks very much like chrushed, dried cow patties.
