One of the covid patients on our makeshift covid unit had a rapid response called today... Nurse went in for vitals on 46year old Hispanic male and he was unresponsive; BP was 53/34. Transfered to ICU

It is kinda surreal actually seeing patients start to potentially die of COVID again. For a good minute there in 2021 I coulda sworn we had this thing licked. I've learned to pretty much stop speculating about the future because I am not very good at it

I mean we can take sick leave for covid but there are major financial incentives in place to prevent people who aren't actually feeling sick from calling in sick

Frankly they also incentivize anyone who is feeling sick not to call in

Damn. Just tested positive. I know for a fact I got it from one of my coworkers because I literally don't go out and do anything, I have been self isolated for like 2 years.

It just sucks that I had to take a second job to survive, and also that people would be so selfish/inconsiderate to come to work while infected.

and I know who it is too. This motherfucker called out cause his kid had covid then came in without a mask.... AND he looked sick as fuck too.

Oh well. I have covid. Yay. Not much to do now except wait. And continue to isolate.

You can't even really be mad at people for not isolating anymore. It made sense when there was a sense that maybe we really were all "in this together". When it became clear that we don't have the critical mass necessary for that to be the case... Circumstances change

And now his employer is probably not going to have any workforce for the next week

I can also imagine that if something went bad for one of these employees, there could be some liability for the employer.

Sure, but if we are splitting statistical hairs, what percentage of omicron reinfections were unvaccinated? I'm not convinced the vaccination makes a significant difference at all on the "infectivity" of omicron, as measured literally by likelihood to get a positive COVID test

I don’t think a lot of people understand that when a virus escapes the vaccine it also escapes natural immunity

I agree, but I think we can make a pretty safe assumption that the bulk of 1st infection cases are unvaccinated, meaning that the split of reinfection with omicron likely heavily favors the unvaccinated.

Yea, but I think we’re quickly running out of unvaccinated people who haven’t been infected with any variant.

I’m really fascinated how omicron isn’t infecting as many people as we expected. I’m beginning to think there is a significant portion of the population that has really strong innate immunity to covid.

I think the unvaccinated are faring worse in highly vaccinated areas because they have been more protected, and a larger proportion never got infected in previous waves

So what should I do? The test said I should seek professional care from my PCP


I'm starting to feel pretty bad. Whole body hurts. Maybe steroids or something?

Without widespread random sampling it's really impossible to know how much omicron has already spread. Most of the " cases" that I see have been vaccinated- by a very slim margin- but that could be entirely a reflection of the population demographics as far as  I can tell. I've never once had to call a code on a patient who had been vaccinated who presented for COVID symptoms. Positive asymptomatic cases are a dime a dozen to the point that doing medical logistics has become a game of encouraging doctors to avoid testing patients whenever legally possible

My next shift starts 6 hours and 45 minutes from now and I can't sleep. If my past is a decent guide then I'll be lucky to get 3 hours tonight. There will be another one after that. Because fuck me.

Basically at this point you have to be very specific about what you mean when you say things like "a covid case" or else you'll just be talking past each other endlessly. Even within the halls of the hospital people are barely on the same page right now

Doctors resent my patients because of the fact that they "have COVID" and that's a pain in their ass. It's ironic how caring for covid patients becomes less of a pain in the ass when all of your patients have it- for purely [superimposed] logistical reasons
