Na. They just have increase in costs and raise prices. It all nets out to the same. Grocery stores don't make any more. Farmers though get higher prices for crops, fuel costs the same, seed costs the same, labour doesn't make up that much of a cost in grains. Farmers will get more money to increase fertilizer.  Crops that are labour intensive like grapes, berries, apples and others will go up significantly, but that all gets passed on to the consumer.

I think that's a big point that lots of people are missing. If minimum wages goes up, companies just raise prices. It sucks for restaurants and grocery stores, but they know this game pretty well. It's not like it's the first time they ever had wage inflation in the last 50 years. It's pretty fucking regular.

So, someone tell me, What is the actual average cost of living a respectable life? (In 2021 USA - yearly - and within reason).

the average rent for usa is ~$800.

$8/hr x 40 hr workweek = $320 gross, $640 biweekly before deductions
$1280 minus 10% in taxes leaves $1152

$1152 monthly income - $800 rent = $350
lets assume that $800 rent includes all utilities.

  $350
  -$50 phone bill
  -$50 car insurance
  -$50 gasoline for car
-$100 groceries

= $100 left over each month

these values are very low and not realistic. most people have debt to pay also each month.

this is just an example.

its not a question of is this a "respectable" wage. we should be asking "is this a livable wage?"

Most people have roommates or a mate if living off those wages.
Probably in a 5-600/mo place around here
That's only 250/300 per person per month for rent.

I spend 250/wk on weed

oh, prices will go up to cover labor costs, even though it shouldn't be - maybe they should stop paying their CEOs a few hundred to thousands of times more than their lowest paid workers when their CEOs do jack shit of worth for that amount - CEOs around the world in comparison generally make a few dozen times to a a hundredish times their lowest paid worker in general. but the thing is, when your paying your lowest paid employees, that is not your only expense in a business. you're also having to take into account paying the bills, leases, purchasing goods/raw materials, replacing machinery, maintenance, paying employees whose pay is high enough that it wont be affected by the pay increase (though it may be affected indirectly - some of the lower paid ones you may have to give a pay bump as well so they don't feel left out, but because they are higher paid, it might not need to be as high. plus, there's less of them, so less of them to give a raise to.)

in other words, even if you doubled the pay of all your lowest paid employees, it's NOT going to lead to a 5$ burger turning into a 10$ burger if the business passed on the costs to consumers, because labor costs of your lowest paid workers do not make up 100% of the cost of a business. not even. it might turn into 5.50$ burger, maybe even a 6$ burger...but this is a "whatever" change that most people could live with, because suddenly the economy would be BOOMING. and you know what?

businesses wouldn't be bitching very much either because the amount of customers would skyrocket. suddenly all those poor millennials wouldn't be so poor anymore, and would have spending money and the desire to spend. this is why the argument for "there shouldn't be living wage jobs at mcdonalds, only teenagers should work there!" is absolutely backassward. you WANT that teenager to have extra spending money. that teenager having extra spending money is a godsend to the economy. they go on to spend spend spend, support businesses, maybe save up for college or other higher education with that extra money, or invest, and go on with a strong start to life - instead of a shitty start, a shitty car that breaks down, and broken dreams, stuck on government support and misery. besides, for all you know, that teenager might be all that's supporting a dysfunctional family with that job. it's...happened. all too often.

Great points everyone, and not just y'all two.

Unfortunately no matter how much we discuss this here, nothing we say is actually going to have an effect. Whatever the politicians decide is what's going to happen.

That's why we should start planning NOW for "what if" it happens. Because prices will rise, maybe not double of course like you said, but inflation will insue, sure. So the people already making $15 an hour, now their money is worth maybe $12 an hour.

The reason I asked about stocks is because I'm new to them and Ahab knows a good bit because he's been at it for a while. I hate to look at this complicated situation as a way to make money, but why not?

I missed out on Amazon, Bitcoin, Tesla, Corona Virus, and so many other major crazy opportunities to double or tripple or even 10x money. I just want to make myself and other people here on this site aware that this might be a stock opportunity that could pay off quite well- and with little risk IMO... way less risk than let's say bitcoin.

if i had to guess, i would assume good investments would be:

psychedelics: they're legalized in Oregon now (well, it will probably take a couple years, but still) so companies that work on psychedelic therapy i'd imagine would do a great business there. there's a lot of demand for mental wellness, alternative addiction treatments, PTSD, and the like, and psychedelics are a much more "natural", "permanent" solution than SSRIs and the like that appeal to many. plus, there's a lot of promising results from them. provided it's done right and there aren't too many setbacks (some weird PR disaster or something that sets research back), i would see this making a huge boom as the next big thing in depression treatment/actual cure when combined with a trained therapist to guide someone. that said, psychedelics aren't for everyone, since they ARE powerful drugs, (some people need to keep their head firmly attached to their shoulders and focused on the lessons the world around them is teaching them) but they are amazingly safe for how potent they are.

green technology: this is the future. there's no point denying it. solar, wind, hydro, energy storage (because you're going to need to store said renewable energy), hell, even fusion technology seems to actually be making progress this time thanks to advances in AI. nuclear is still suffering from NIMBY status, unfortunately, so we might want to wait on that. the future is green - go for it.

lab grown meat - yeah, people are going to turn their noses up at this for now - but it's cheap (not yet, but economy of scale will let it be), and not everyone's going to. cell cultured meat, no animals harmed, less methane emissions, greener on the planet, cheaper, potential for exotic meats like lion or whale without actually needing to hunt said animals.(whether this would be a good or bad thing is debatable - however, if i'm right, it likely would flood the market with cheap "lion" meat, for instance, causing it to be absolutely worthless for poachers to hunt actual lions for meat, protecting them from poaching. that said, i doubt lions are hunted for the meat, but this was just an example. insert endangered species of choice here. :P )

water filtration technology, especially companies that come up with a effective new way of purifying water from seawater with little energy, quickly - water is a precious resource, and it's getting harder to get clean water these days. any company that comes up with ways of recycling old water to make it like new, or desalinating sea water cheaply to potable drinking water on a large scale, is likely going to do well. i'd imagine this would be a longer term project though - stuff like this takes a while to build.

automation - things like automated farmer robots are a thing these days. wal-mart has robot floor cleaners. there's robot secretaries in japan. robots are coming for our jobs in all sorts of places. keep a look out  for companies that deal with automation, especially ones that serve big corporations. or companies that service said automated machines. or make the parts for said machines.

those are a few things i can think of that are going to likely take off in the upcoming years, if my guess is right.

oh, and self-driving cars, of course. tesla is a good bet, obviously. not sure if it's overvalued or not atm, but i doubt it's going to absolutely tank as a company anytime soon. :P

Great post Man! If I were allowed to leave ratings I'd give you a solid 5.

Hey, why don't you make a thread with this post so that more shroomerites can see this info- and also maybe add their own two cents ! Sort of like " Good stocks to invest in based on current world situation" or something like that.

Those are all really good ideas. Honestly I hardly have anything to invest, but I do have a little bit.

I am already into the company Numinus Wellness a Canadian company that has a license to produce and administer mushrooms, mdma and others for therapeutic use- the stocks are cheap too, like $1- could be big.

I have a little bit of solar but the automation thing is a great idea, same with lab grown or "fake" meat.

And that's really cool to think about being able to try whale, or like anything really.
( sorry a weird and dark thought just popped into my head- what if some wacko's start making human meat and eating that!? Yikes, lol. sorry ) I'd like to try wooly mammoth for sure.

Anyways, - thanks for the post. !:sun:

haha, i'm not sure if i'm the one to start a post about stocks or stock suggestions, seeing as how i've never touched a stock in my life, or even know how to purchase one. i never have more than 2 bucks in my bank account after all the bills are paid, so stocks are kind of a pipe dream for me. i do read a lot of science articles, though - those are just the kind of things i see likely to take off in the future, based on how technology seems to be heading, and what makes sense from a practical standpoint. you're always going to need energy, clean water, sound mental health, people are NOT going to want to give up their meat (sorry vegans, just give it up. lab grown meat is a lovely compromise though!), and companies are always going to want to cheapen labor costs, even though its going to eventually lead to the death of capitalism and the rise of universal basic income. (there's simply no way around it. automation is eventually going to result in not enough jobs to go around for everyone this time. at this point...what are you going to do? let millions to billions of people starve to death? shame them for having no jobs, when there's no jobs to be had?)

which again, leads to the problem of "not every job should be a living wage job". there's yet another reason why you don't see teenagers working the mcdonalds till anymore and it's an older person in their 30s (on average) - because there's simply not enough jobs to go around for said teenagers anymore (on average). people are having to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet because everyones getting paid absolute minimum (as adults), the absolute minimum isn't enough to live on for a single job(for adults, even by yourself, with roommates sometimes), and getting a higher paying job is a stupid thing to say because there is only so many higher paying jobs to be had - for every 10-20 cashiers, baggers, customer service reps or more, there's only one manager position. for every several managers or more, there's only one senior manager position. for every several of those, there's only one CEO position. "high paying jobs" is a precious, rare resource, like gold... and it's being outsourced, to other countries. we're becoming a service economy. and now the lowest paying jobs like cashiers are being replaced... by robots such as self-check out stands. robot moppers. robot farmers. robot attorneys. it's only a matter of time before we have to face the music and address the issue - we have a lot of people and not enough jobs to go around. at that point, America is going to face a crisis, and we're either going to come out stronger for it or be broken entirely. the question is - are we strong enough to look at the issue and start asking the hard questions NOW, before shit starts falling apart, or are we going to do our usual thing - do the right thing, after we've tried absolutely everything else?

eh, i don't think localization is the way to go. it's pretty pointless, really. we're all in this together as humanity, and the internet has increasingly interconnected us and made the distances between us more and more pointless. i ordered a tiger face mask from china, a crystal from south carolina, and an ammonite from Hawaii, all with a few clicks of a button, and i know they'll all get to me with 99.99% reliability, and a refund if they don't. (or a replacement item. actually i already got the tiger mask and i love it. lots of complements and a jealous co-worker lol.)

this is yet another argument for a federal minimum wage that's set above all the state ones - it sets an even playing field for all america. it does mean that things will be unbalanced in the economy for a while...but not exactly in a bad way. things will take a while to reshuffle, yes, but this also will make places like the central part of america more appealing, as the cheaper housing and gas prices will likely cause more people to consider a move there, away from the overcrowded areas in the coast, lowering housing costs in those areas and balancing things over the course of a few to several years. this would also lead to, interestingly enough, an initial culture clash as more liberal "city folk" move into more rural areas, but in reality, it would eventually lead to a less polarized america as rural areas become more mixed views - this is hardly a bad thing. and also, much of the red states are also welfare states due to the sheer number of folks in poverty, on food stamps, etc - raising minimum wage would dramatically improve their quality of life, and reduce their burden on the federal government, increasing the US GDP.

small businesses may initially "suffer" from increased labor costs, but they can simply pass it on to consumers - and they wouldn't suffer for very long, as the increased demand for goods would be enormous. 43% of america would be affected by the wage increase. 43%! for fucks sake, small businesses should be screaming at congress for this to happen immediately.

so why not just set the minimum wage to 1000$ an hour!!!1!! you ask? i mean, we could. that's the thing. it's a silly thing to do though. the market would actually just re-balance to accommodate this, with higher costs in goods to reflect the new change, but everything would just have more zeros on it, and we'd be having to use benjamins for candy bars. no one wants that, nor the gigantic headache of the markets figuring out what all the fair new prices were. the problem is, right now the prices aren't fair either, on the side of fair wages. it's better to err on the side of a bit too much for labor wages though, because it will just self-correct eventually (a bit of a headache) than it is to err on the side of a heck of a lot too little for fair labor wages, because without that healthy supply of cashflow from the larger populace... you have no market. a few fat cats does not a healthy market make.

In my country here in SE, people spreading out, decongesting the badly polluted urbans as I have done 4-5 years ago sounds appealing for me. living within our means in a Local community that can be a part of a even greater community, it can be nation or a planet. localized form of energy, localized food, localized businesses, localized loans etc. this are the things that are sustainable in a time of extremes, when the world is going thru a time of such volatility & uncertainty. it is the fragile centralized system that is most at risk, this system that the majority (You and I) sense, we feel it, we don't need somebody to tell US. & what if the banks fail, what if the storm from a rapidly changing climate where so bad that the deliveries can't come across to one place to another, ain't just a make believe hypothesis, just like the world have gone thru at the start of 2020. this is where the people gets nervous, in a localized living & local means of sustainace, worries of such obstacles is lessened.

It's partially a muth the prices will increase if labor costs increase.  Prices will increase to what the market will bear, any higher and they lose customer share to competitors.  The end result is typically prices go up a little and companies eat the vast share of increased labour costs from their earnings.

Simply said, a company can raise prices all they want, at some point customers will stop buying.  These companies pay economists and actuaries good money to determine the optimal price to retain market share and charge maximum for the product.

We can, and should, ignore industries like healthcare which work abso-fucking-lutely terribly under a free market model, due to the nature of when you need medical assistance, you really don't have time to comparison shop or make an informed decision like you would buying a car.

I mean... the entire reason the US is in this mess right now is due to a "fuck you i only care about myself" mentality that led to over 400k deaths and a projected 600k deaths baked in even if we somehow manage to do everything right over the course of the next several months. the rest of the world, barring a few other US-minded countries, are handling things pretty damn well, considering the absolute shitshow we're making of things and dragging them down, hogging all the vaccines and dragging the entire world down with us.

the risk didn't come from being more globalized - it came from refusing to cooperate with others, from a "USA! USA!" mentality, a tribalism mentality. when it's an us vs them mindset, things like this occur. you retreat, you hide away, and fear dictates all your actions, ruling your life, clouding your judgement.

and you become easily manipulated, easy prey by any ol schemer who wants to con you out of what little money and power you have to increase their own.
