is anyone trying to morph cubes with luminars?(glowindark!)

anyone in here, i know im stupid when it comes to uumm.. mycology or wutever, but i think it would be kewl for an advanced person to try and breed a Cubensis and Panellus stipticus
(Luminescent Panellus) to get some glow in the dark cubes!!!!! is that possible?? hehe... PLEASE let me know... and let everyone else know!!??

wouldnt you need to figyure out both mushrooms genome..( I realy have no idea.) but i dont think its possible

No, not by breeding them or anything. You might be able to splice the genes into it if you had a $100 million labratory, and a few hundred thousand to spend on the project.

to my knowledge the chemical that makes the luminars (and all other bioluminescent fungi) glow actually makes them poisonous.  so just grow the luminars and the cubs, then turn the lights off when you trip :wink:

i didnt know they were poisonous, it just said NO NUTRITIONAL VALUE it never said poisonous, but that was just at a glance so...

They've spliced biolumnescence genes into lots of things.

I think there are some glowing goldfish that will be hitting the pet stores soon.

Yes it can be done but who has the equipment necessary for genetic manipulation? Do you really think anyone in the business is going to invest time and effort into making an illegal mushroom bioluminescent? I think if anything they would focus on making other fungi produce medicines or enhancing edible species for pest resistance. Pipe dream on steroids here, this thread should have died long ago (especially with the notion that adding bioluminescence would make them poisonous).  :confused:

I have seen glowing mice and tobacco plants that have had the gene from a firefly spliced in, it was interesting. But I have learned something from this thread, glowing goldfish! Now that would actually be pretty cool to watch if you were tripping...

Not impossible but not likely successful either

hybridisation doesnt work well bewteen species and genera only pleurotus and ganoderma have been moderately successful
but fusion product overcome many incompatibilities as do several other techniques

they use auxotrophic mutants to fuse

p cornucopiae x L edodes
P ostreatus x L edodes
P cornucopie x L decastes
L ediodes x L decastes
P cornucopiae x P ostreatus

successful fuiting was had from most of these to varying degrees - the comparison of L edodes, P cornucopiae and the intermediate was the best example - halfway inbetween

The techniques dont look that complicated just secilaist enzymes you could buy and buffer solutions which are given for many species

yeah I agree.. plus its all slimy.. the seem to grow with a coating over them that keeps them moist.. bugs will stick in the slimy coating sometimes. :crazy:
