I need help reintroducing cubes to the wild
    #2979147 - 08/08/04 09:26 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I have just finished building a pasture fence and i'm now in the market for some cows. I live in nw georgia 70 miles north of atlanta and I have never found a wild cube in my area. I need to know which strain would be suitable to grow outside in this climate. I would also like to know if anyone else has attempted to reintroduce a domestic strain to the wild if so was it done successfully? my planned approach is to start some outdoor beds near the outside of the barn where i will be throwing hay down from the loft i'm hoping this will result in the bovines eating some spores and pooping germinated substrate. from afoafs indoor experiments fruiting from cased jars with baggies over them I can aquire sandwich bags that are stained almost black with spores I was thinking of rinsing these with distilled water and pouring it directly over their hay before feeding just to help things along. I'd just like to know if this actually stands a chance of working and if so which strain would be the best for this kind of experiment? any thoughts or advice any of you have about this i would greatly appreciate thanks for your help.

Drop the spores into the water trough. Just about any cube will work in that climate. If you wish to be 'authentic' order gulf coast or treasure coast. Florida strains.

You could use a "spore rocket"... Simply get a cheap rocket from estes and load the spores on top of the wadding or above the chute. When the ejection charge blows it will scatter spores like crazy! Hundreds of square miles can be seeded this way. Use a smallish engine or a larger rocket so that it doesn't go too high. If you shoot it up to 1000 feet they might not come down on your pasture at all.

do you guys think spent wbs cakes could be crumbled over cracked corn then fed to the cows with good results or would the cows digestive system destroy the mycellium?

It would destroy the mycelium. Few things can survive a cow.

maybe it would be best to just crumble them over cow pies then?

indeed, that would be a bit too far north...

common sense... Weilli are native to Atlanta. Huatla, Malabar, Mazatapec, Gulf Coast, Florida, Mexi-cube, and Acadian Coast all come to mind as good contenders. For the most part any cube should work if it's going to work at all as the habitat is practically the same for all of them (with a few notable exceptions).

I have on several occasions...

nope, not yet...

I have colonised and fruited an entire barn floor which was right next to an active horse pasture which was naturally full of shit... no luck :frown:

I've heard rumors of success using spray bottles of spore water directly on piles of shit... I, however, have had no luck with this approach. I'm of the strong opinion that climate is very much the reason for failure. I'm talking about middle and eastern tennessee so i bet your climate is extremely similar.

i don't wanna pee on your parade but you need to know what your up against. good luck with it.

I know it's a long shot but if I could get this to work it would releive me of alot of stress no more worrying about barney fife kickin down my door and takin me to jail what the hell could they do to me then confiscate my cows

maybe so but we were getting some cows anyway so why not try to utilise their natural by products? is this idea really that far fetched? if so i'm sorry for wasting your time but i don't really see why it couldn't work. and just what is wrong with trying to find a way to cultivate without having to worry about big brother coming along and taking me to jail while seizing my house and land at the same time. no i don't think my voices have anything to do with this one that is a legitimate fear.

since i'm further north than most cubes grow naturaly. I guess the question really is which strain does best in slightly colder conditions?

I recently had a thought about taking a gallon of distilled water and adding a large spore print to it and putting it into a powerfull water gun and soaking down a good area in a near by field.

That's a great idea. A supersoaker would probably be able to shoot a hole right into a moist cowpie, thereby innoculating deep into it.

Anyone tried this?
