Red Spider mites
    #25938982 -

Looking for all input on battling spider mites. My first approach will be a radionics box.

I was recently sent several plants with mites which I did not realize until a week later or so. Immediately moved them all outside and tossed some too. Cleaned the shelf they were on and swept ect.

I realize I won’t be able to dectect the bugs until they’ve established themselves fairly well due to their size. Only full grown adults are red babies are transparent and hard to see with 30 x due to the fact they seem to be the same color as the leaf nearly but I’ve spotted a few

I’m seeking preventing maintenance methods to hopefully assure that they never get ahold. I’ve got many plants indoors that will need to be treated. I’ve never sprayed anything other than been on my plants and rarely. I’m not very open to chemicals and bacteria based pesticides

Although I may consider Bacteria based organic pesticides

Please tell me what you would do?

Azamax or azotrol are both good options for prevention and treatment for light infestations. They are really the same product just come or Pepsi and both are omri. If you have a decent infestation sns-217 is a good product. I don't believe they have there omri certification but the ingredients are all simple and there's even a few knockoff diy recipes online that mimic it.

Sns ingredients

Rosemary Oil2%
Polyglyceryl Oleate0.6%
Lauric Acid0.1%
Water Balance to100%

What about spraying around pets? I might treat them once as preventative and cross my fingers I never see them again

I don’t see any on the plants currently indoors. Any adults that is lol

Neither product would mess with pets. The azamax, azatrol are neem oil extracts which you can Ingest neem oil and people do all the time. The sns is basically just suspended rosemary oil so definitely safe.

If you found adults you definitely have baby's and eggs on your other plants. Always spray of you find any spider mites, basically consider them all contaminated.

If you use either of these products for preventative spray once, wait a week or two and spray again. Neither of these products kill eggs so you have to spray to kill all the baby's wait for the next cycle of eggs to hatch kill them and you should be free. Never spray just once, gives them a chance to build immunity.

I’m thinking about predatory bugs lady bugs or nematodes

Which one will kill thrips also??

Maybe spray once then unleashed predators then spray again later

Neem has some toxicity, try to avoid ingestion. Not sure about purified neem extracts which may only have the beneficial compounds but plain neem oil is not meant to be consumed by humans or pets. I worry that some weed growers might be a bit too enthousiastic with this "natural treatment".

I've seen some red spider mites apparently (this is not on weed here), they don't seem to make webs nor do they build in numbers fast or do a lot of noticeable damage but I do think they are harmful and not predatory ones.

Am personally gonna be looking at beneficial bacteria and molds to combat pests on plants and fungi. Not sure yet how selective the strains will be, some are bred to only target some pests.

I personally never liked the idea of adding bugs to combat bugs because at the end of the day you still have a bunch of dead bugs on your weed. With that being said lady bugs never worked well for me but predator mites did work.

Lacewing work wonderful and stick around. They will handle all soft bodies.. I use N.Californicus which is a predatory mite that can also live off pollen between bad bug hatches (and works in my humidity ranges).. For a foliar I use Method 1, Bt, and neem extract in rotation. I've also just used silica and Bt, or if completely biological then an OHN @1:1000which is (Angelica, garlic, cinnamon, ginger, and licorice in a sugar or sugar/beer ferment) Stirring every day for three months, use in conjunction with a FPJ(fermented plant juice)@1:500 , and Brown rice vinegar@1:1000 for basic IPM..You can drink OHN as a cold and flu prevention.... For thrips I would use lacewing or Minute Pirate Bugs..

Raven, I saw your posts on market place. I just wanted to say thanks for those posts and I'm sorry about your RSM situation. Situations like that is a good reminder to always quarantine new plants.

Ty for the advice everyone I appreciate it

Shroominmyroom, it wasn’t easy to do that. I didn’t want to but I had to. I knew he’d do the same to other users if I allowed it. The situation backfired badly but I’ll take it gladly I know I did the right thing besides feeding into his games. I’m not the type to publicly bash people but with how he handled the situation and also how he treated me? I was amazed, not one apology what so ever lmao... incredible.

On another note I’m liking the sounds of predatory bugs since I’m not concerned about bug shit on my weed. I agree tho smoking poop isn’t cool

I manage them with the garden hose. Or a spray bottle. I smash as many as I can and spray off the rest. It seems to work pretty good.

Have you been able to erradicate them or do they keep coming back?

I'm a proponent for neem and a schedule. It works 100% of the time if you're consistent and keep a schedule.
Here's what I did to get rid of an indoor infestation once and for all:

  • Step 1: Buy a pressure sprayer from amazon or wherever, eg, this one works great: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039EEN0M/

  • Step 2: Boil about a gallon of water.

  • Step 3: Pour boiled water into sprayer. Add a few cap fulls of concentrated neem and and shake it up like it's an anti-vaxxer who needs some adult SIDS. Keep doing this until the water is a yellow cloud.

  • Step 4: Spray your plants. Spray the plants top soil. Spray underneath the plants leaves. Spray on top of the plants leaves. Spray the plants stems. Spray the area around the plants. Spray your neighbors plants. Spray the squirrels. Spray everything until it's all drenched in neem.

  • Step 5: Wait 3 days.

  • Step 6: Buy some isopropyl alcohol, 70-91%, it doesn't matter. Mix it at around 15 parts water 1 part alcohol.

  • Step 7: Repeat step 4 but with the new alcohol mix.

  • Step 8: Wait 3 more days.

  • Step 9: Repeat steps 2 through 8.

  • Step 10: Repeat Step 9 for a month or two for maximum genocide. You can skip Step 6 after a couple of weeks but replace it with neem instead.

Both mixes are safe for all plants, animals and you. I've had great success with orchids, kratom, weed, salvia, all of my garden vegetables. The neem will act as a foliar feeder so it's a win
If you're spraying flowering weed with neem, don't do it if you're over a month into flower. Just make edibles instead. And make sure you wash any consumables after harvest.

If you don't want to use real pesticides on your plants then you must play a game of attrition to kill these things.
The neem will disrupt their breeding cycle and make it extremely difficult for them to breed. The rubbing alcohol will immediately kill all stages of the mites except for eggs. Their breeding cycle is about 2 weeks and eggs can survive longer, hence the month or two schedule.

tl;dr - spray with neem every 3 days for at minimum one month.
