I change my own oil on my two older cars, and do all other repairs and maintenance, but my daily driver is under warranty with all maintenance covered, so that's on the dealership.

I totally agree with avoiding those filthy quick-lube joints though.

I worked in one for about a year when I was still a teenager.

Those businesses make money on the premise that you'll also get an air filter from them, or possibly an injector cleaning, or radiator flush. That's where the money is made.

A conventional oil change, even at $30 a pop is still worth it if you avoid the bullshit marked up items that aren't necessary.

But as far as how they actually operate at those stores, it's efficient, it's clean, and from my experience with it, a much cleaner oil change than you would do at home with exact amounts of oil that your vehicle needs down to the milliliter.

Get ouy of here with this self rightious everyone should chamge their own oil crap. Like not to sound this way, but to some people time is the most valueable asset in their lives. Everything else falling at a easy second. Don't care what the situation is, some people just aint got time for that. They have children, jobs, and shroom hobbies. Could they probly figure out a process to their own oil change? Yea... do the fucking care too? Probly not they probably are worried about dishes. Get fuggin real people. Dump your pride.

What particular issues have chain oil change places caused your car?

And what exactly do you think they would fuck with on your car?

I've heard stories of some shady places not replacing the oil filter, which is shit, but that's as bad as it would get, and wouldn't damage the motor. Would have to get another oil change though a bit prematurely due to the filter.

I wouldn't be saying any of this shit hadn't I gone to college for automotive technology, and worked in the automotive industry (including an oil change chain as my first automotive job) for 7 years of my life.

Not to sound all self righteous and all, but you guys are wrong. The only reason to change your own oil on a conventional oil car, is if you actually enjoy working on your car. And that's cool too. I did it myself until about 3 years ago.

1. It takes less time to change your own oil than to drive it somewhere for them to change it.
2. Doing it yourself means that you wont get upsold things you do'nt need.
3. Doing it yourself properly means that you wont have your sump bolt cross-threaded or improperly tightened, or your oil filter double gasketed.  These mistakes can lead to a destroyed engine.  It does not take long at all for an engine to be toast once it loses all its oil.  While a mistake such as this may be reimbursed by a dealership, rest assured that a quick lube place will do everything in their ability to deny fault.  So if you do'nt (erroneously) feel that doing it yourself is worth the time and effort, then how are you going to feel when you're out weeks and thousands ov dollars for a new longblock?

The third point was obviously the highlighted reasoning behind this thread.  The intent was'nt self-righteous.  It's to protect the material belongings ov the people in this online community, many ov whom surely require a vehicle to go about their lives.  And if you think i'm being dramatic about the potential destruction caused by something so simple as a negligent oil change, then go ahead and search online for quick lube horror stories and you will find no shortage( here's a start: https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/4ood10/post_your_jiffy_lube_horror_stories_here/ ).

This is a thread about quick lube places.  I understand going to a dealer for free oil changes as they're held to a higher responsibility if they fuck up.  I totally understand going to a reputed independent shop or a dealer for work that one does not feel comfortable doing.  I do'nt do all my own work.  If i need something done on my jags that i do'nt feel comfortable doing, i go to this English car specialist i trust and am friendly with, or take my delivery/smoking car to this other independent shop i trust.  But an oil change is very simple and can be done quickly and effectively.  Yet despite this simplicity it is essential that it is performed properly, and this is something quick lube places fail to do right nearly every time.

Automotive college and 7 years in the industry and you cant figure out that losing all an engine's oil in short time due to the filter being double-gasketed or a drain bolt working itself out, issues extremely common to the negligent oil changes performed at quick lube places, can elicit the caution to do it yourself?  Or are you just trying to keep your old shady-salesmen-armed-with-air-tools-seemingly-powered-by-their-head colleagues in business one naïve victim at a time?  But ov course, even though i have seen the exact issues i described MANY times, adding to that improperly torqued lug bolts/nuts, i am wrong because i never worked at one ov these places, right?

No, it takes longer to do it yourself. No doubt about it. Unless you have a drum of oil, a pallet of filters, and a service pit in your garage.

You don't have to go out specifically for that. You just do it while you're out driving and have 20min to kill. Changing your own oil requires going out multiple times to get oil, then change it, then you have to return it. Then comes the clean-up.

Them screwing up an oil cap isn't that common at all. Yeah, it happens and other stuff happens. That is why they have insurance though.

I doubt Kroniko really cares that much about the oil change industry, LOL.

Don't you have eBay? I'm guessing auto ramps exist that side too.

What I'm getting at is the same time it takes to drop by the auto store for oil and filters is less than stopping for a quickie-lube. Yet you can buy premium consumables for much cheaper.

If you are rich enough to be disconnected from average reality, or in a place where these services are dirt cheap I get it though.

I'm a ramp fan personally. Unless I'm working on suspension (which I avoid) there's no other choice. Easier and safer.
