Does anyone here eat hemp seeds?
    #25896683 -

I use to make hemp milk to put in my coffee, but I stopped buying them years ago, was thinking of buying some now to make a chocolate hemp milk from this website https://minimalistbaker.com/make-hemp-milk/

think I should add the cocoa and the vanilla or just the cocoa?

what do you do with hemp seeds?

literally just finished two pieces of toast topped with peanut butter with shelled hemp seed sprinkled on top prior to seeing this post

aside from that, like to put a few scoops into a smoothie

Shelled is kind of the only way to get the healthy form of the seed here in Canada
one of the provisions when hemp cultivation and sales were allowed
was that the seeds could not be viable for planting
since cooking them in the shells would destroy the benefits of the omega fats
it was decided they would be shelled and sold raw under the name 'hemp hearts'
and had to be packaged in containers for refrigeration as a result of losing the protective measures of the shell
tho the shells themselves were then ground into protein powders and sold separately

have had roasted and salted hemp seeds in shells
kind of taste like Spitz sunflower seeds, but can eat the shell in the process
had a 5lb bucket of them and ate by the handful

on that note, will also sometimes just pour myself a handful of hemp hearts as a snack
or mix a tablespoon into a cup of yogurt
so can add those to the list

delish

I wish I thought about the processing before downing pounds of em. I was mainly getting amino acids and fiber I guess.

I'm going to start buying hemp seed oil.

does that mean if I buy them at bulk barn there is no omega fats because they are not refrigerated?

if they are shelled but in a sealed package, they are fine
but once the package is opened it needs to be refrigerated or they will spoil quite quickly
have never been to bulk barn; are they selling them off shelves in standard ziploc bags and sealed buckets
or do they just have a bin with a scoop and you fill your own bag?

would avoid the latter, but more due to risk of spoilage than issues with the fatty acids

the damage to the omega fats comes when they are cooked
above a certain cooking temperature, the omega fats get turned into trans fats

typically, anything you can buy from store shelves is safe in that regard tho
to my comprehension, toasted/roasted hemp seeds are done at a low enough temperature to keep the omegas

but avoid using hemp oil (which it cold-pressed in production) as a cooking base or anything

The light, nutty taste is perfect drizzled over veggies, on pasta, or even on your popcorn for movie night. You can also add it to salad dressings, sauces, dips, and shakes. Use this light green oil as a substitute for other oils in recipes that aren’t heated above 300 °F (150 °C). Not recommended for frying.

Quote:
It is clear that cooking temperatures of about 170-250°C do not lead to an increase of the t-FAs. Similar investigations with other hemp seed oils underscore these results. Only two oils had a t-FA content of 0.85% after being heated at 220°C for half an hour (Mölleken and Melchior 1998). In contrast, a temperature of 350°C deteriorates the hemp oil, and leads to the formation of significant amounts of t-FAs.
This fact is confirmed by the results in Table 3. Some t-FAs can be detected in hemp oil that is held at 200 to 220°C for a long period (16 hours). Thus, isomerisation does take place under prolonged moderate stress, so that t-FAs are formed and the amounts of the unsaturated FAs decrease.

the tech for production has advanced since my father and his friends did the first big push to legalize hemp and started Manitoba Harvest
so the roasted hemp seeds in my old 5lb bucket may have been healthier than my presumption

but it is just something to be aware of -- the omega fats in hemp are great, accidentally converting them to trans fats not so good

roasted in shells would be totally fine in a fill your own bin
if they are shelled and in a bin, that surprises me but perhaps the lid is considered sufficient sealing
hemp seed has a rather distinct and off-putting smell when it spoils, so presume they would not last long if they were selling from a bin without some measure of mitigation

would still refrigerate at home to maximize how long they stay good tho
