How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?

Yeah, you’re right Amanita.  I should just watch it.  I’m also gonna rent ‘Drive’, I’m sick of not having seen that movie.

My brother had that movie for awhile, I liked it.  I don’t know how well it was received but it seems like one that could catch some flak maybe.. maybe not.  It had a strange feel to it and you’ll appreciate the 80’s Atari era feel of some of the soundtrack.  Some of the songs could have easily been in an 80’s episode of Black Mirror or Stranger Things and it wouldn’t raise an eyebrow..  I also like how Gosling didn’t feel the need to talk or over exaggerate his role (in a big way, he did the opposite small way)  Cool as a cucumber..

So today I had a few free hours and decided to rent Drive, and a cool thing happened.  Amazon gave me the option to pay to rent it, or I could watch it for free, but it had ads.  I chose that option, and while I was subjected to four separate 30 second blocks of commercials, I saved 4 bucks on the rental.  Pretty cool.

I was already really familiar with the Drive soundtrack because I listen to Kavinsky, College, Electric Youth, etc anyway, but it was really cool to see how the songs were used in the movie.  Cool original score too, by Cliff Martinez of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  He also scored Nicholas Winding Refn’s ‘Only God Forgives’, also starring Gosling.  I swear that the Stranger Things composers were very heavily influenced by the music from that movie, evidence below:

Anyway, Drive is a pretty sick movie.  I give it a solid 8/10, maybe an 8.5 upon subsequent viewings.  As you mentioned, Gosling plays it great with this very strong subtlety.  You see his facade and can’t tell if there’s a good guy under there or some kind of sociopath, and it ends up being a bit of both.  His calmness through some of that shit is unnerving itself.  Great supporting cast, I’m always glad to see Bryan Cranston and Ron Perlman.  Oscar Isaac and Christine Hendricks had short but good roles.  It was a really nice looking movie too, but not as beautiful as ‘The Neon Demon’.  Refn also directed that, and pretty much every shot is so nice looking that you could just take still frames from anywhere and they’d belong in a museum.  But Drive was aesthetic too.  Some very memorable scenes and lines.  “You want a toothpick?”  I definitely feel that Gosling’s character is a real human bean.

Anyway, this thread provided me the impetus to FINALLY see Drive, so thanks again Amanita.  I’ll get around to watching John Wick eventually.

What happened to Kavinsky? Or Justice etc... that was a sick period in electronic music, electro house 07-ish.

Kavinsky stopped releasing for a while, but I think he still DJs around Paris.  In the past month or so he’s been on twitter, teasing some kind of release, which will be his first in ages.

I don’t really know much about Justice, I think they’re still around?

A similar artist to those guys is Lifelike, he just released an EP this past summer called Miami Nice, it was pretty good.

I agree though, a lot of cool music from those French electro-synth dudes back then!

Spree? Really? 6/10 at best.

I was thinking about how disco was so sick. It’s what they modelled house music after... a repetitive 4/4 and they’d loop funk samples and shit over it and voila, years later you have a Daft Punk.
