Got turned down by property owner what'd I do wrong?
    #25817775 -

So I wanted to test out some rather common advice of numerous fellow hunters and I approached the owners of a cow pasture for Access to their field under the guise of taking a survey as part of my University classes in mycology.
I have a regular place I use which is huge and theres a fairly low risk of getting caught but I've only found 2 cubes so I wanted a chance to check out another field. Besides, at the end of the day, it's still trespassing and I don't want to get shot or get a charge. So as a practice run if I ever get the courage to ask those property owners, I decided to go to a field a few miles away to avoid the risk of them running into me totally not being a university student at my job trimming trees.
I went all out, dressed nice, brought my very detailed guide book I've made with a pen and was very respectful and friendly, I'm almost 32 but I've always been told I appear younger plus I'm just a harmless college girl with an assignment due . I told them that I was studying an invasive species of mushroom that's indicated it's been spreading west from Louisiana. All I needed was about an hour and they wouldn't even know I was there.
The son and father were ok with it but the wife stepped and (very snobbily) told me that they don't let just any strange on their ranch and to go bug someone else, my request was very odd and said that if I was in college then where's my car? All her kids had cars while attending college. Asked for my student ID , I said I left it at home. She said back, "then you need to go." So my 1st attemptat asking for permission was truly embarrassing. What would I have done wrong? Is she just a bit+ch or is there a way of knowing who's there just for those sweet, sweet mushrooms? Any one got any better strategies? Or am I incapable of coming across as professional? Is it a Texas thing? What's worked for you?

The wife was just a beeotch, it sounds like your approach was sound. It’s a numbers game, you’re gonna get turned down some.

the woman made a wise choice to ask for ID because a lot of scams start this same way and without proper ID you wont get far. obtain a real student ID or some kind of legit press pass for photography if you want to be successful with your tactics

This is definitely a case where asking permission is better than asking for forgiveness. Could've been way worse if you hadn't asked. You'll have better luck. Your other spot will probably produce way more in the prime season too.

I've been turned down more than I've been given permission, but once you are in it's super sweet hunting, no pressure.

if i were you, i would be a lil less flamboyant with the story. dont go so far with the invasive species yada yada, you might dig yourself into a hole of lies that way. just be strait forward and honest, not too much info, but not a bunch of fake info either. people are often smarter than wed like to give credit.

"that b didnt believe my lies!"...... its not hard to tell when someones not being honest, or hiding the truth.

if you are a female, that dad and son may have been slightly shwooned by your female aura, while the woman was not and could smell the BS.

just ask folks if you can check their property for mushrooms, say lots of good edibles can pop up in pastures or in hay, and you would like to check out this different habitat and see if you have any luck. have a list of some dank edibles that might grow there, and tell them if you find anything good, youll definitely be sure to share!!

i think it helps to be just a lil overly excited, and definitely not nervous lol.

if you want to try to affiliate with a university or something, say you are in a class, that might help if you can score a school ID or other credentials. but i dont think anyone really cares if youve take a class or not, especially if you are older and dont look like your strait outa high school. thats just more extra unnecessary info has a chance of sounding dishonest.

as folks said, itll be a numbers game, some folks will be chill, some will not. you might run even into some folks that will want you to teach them how to find the magic in their pastures.

you might could save you some of the numbers game, rejection, and foot work, if you do something along the lines i did...
i posted an ad on the local classifieds trying to trade wild (edible) mushrooms for meat. ive been vegetarian for 10 years, but trying to eat meat again. but only good quality, farm raised, local, or ethically wild hunted. i got a lot of responses, and almost all of the folks were more interested in the magic. i told them i didnt have any magic to trade (folks might be cops...), but if they had pastures, they likely have some magic growing in the pasture, and id be more than happy to help them look. most were down- now i have free reign to pastures i can go hunt jubilantly.

but like, this was all natural, honest, i legitimately was just looking to trade chanterelles for lamb lol and was blessed with so much more!

DO NOT MENTION LOOKING FOR RARE SPECIES.

Most landowners don't want rare or endangered species documented on their property, the land becomes almost worthless financially when that happens. They are have tons of restrictions forced on them and what was once a possible valuable asset becomes useless. Do leave that out or you will definitely be told NO 99% of the time.
These people aren't stupid,  folks like us have been trespassing on their land since the 60's, they know what you want,  honesty works wonders sometimes.
This works for me, but I  have  some knowledge too:

I love mushrooms, pastures are great places to hunt,  can I take a look around?  I will even  bring them by and show you what I find if you want, I like to try and find edible mushrooms when possible to supplement my grocery bill,  there is also some uses for some of them  as dies, insecticides and so much more. I just really love mushrooms and  it's so hard to find a safe place to be able to get out and explore.

Best wishes to all of you talking to farmers and ranchers,  sometimes just calming their nerves that you're not trying to do something illegal or rip them off.

Remember,  farmers usually talk with each other, do not lie, it's to hard to remember bullshit, the truth does works. Educate them some, it's the only way to break the stigma. Psilocybin just received "Break through" status by the FDA, why should the  government control our Natural medicines.  Give them something to think about, why should we have to pay for something that nature provides for free?

Don't be put off by negative results. At least you put in some effort. Sounds to me like the wife was
the chief in the house there, and she probably saw through your little student story. Perhaps you should
try to avoid elaborate lies and just tell the plain truth - that it's just your hobby hunting mushrooms.

Good luck with your future attempts, I'm pretty sure you'll get in somewhere.

Sad but true, especially in fucking 'Murica. God I can't stand these rednecks and their sense of entitlement. THE EARTH OWNS US, not the other way around.

But yea, this is bound to happen. I get turned down all the time not even looking for actives. If I see an interesting species growing in someone's front yard I will knock and ask to take photos, the vast majority of the time they give me strange looks and say no. Usually I hope they don't even answer the door.

The whole thing is like being an average dude looking for a date, you're going to get turned down a bunch of times, until that one time you don't.

Another way I was thinking about was to ask s property owner if it was ok to use their field to observe some stars as an amateur astronomer. I live in a pretty wooded area and it can be hard to find a wide open space for star gazing I was thinking if I asked to use the field at night so I can get a better view of the stars, it might work. it wouldn't be so much of a lie, I do dabble in astronomy and it's a subject I can answer pretty much any question about without looking like I'm trying to make shit up. Would this work or would they call me a hippie and run me off lol? Does that sound suspicious? I'm just gonna assume that all the ranchers in my area are pretty conservative and mentioning mushrooms would set off their libreal hippie detectors.

Just grow a lifetime supply of cubensis in like a month or so, seems to me to be much safer than making up elaborate lies to trigger-happy Texans. I've seen the Youtube videos, in Texas a .50 BMG Berret is considered a sidearm.

I'm just thinking that honesty is way more functional, as you won't give off any awkward
or suspicious signals when telling why you want to access someone's field. Just my 2 cents
as I know for sure I'm not very good at lying.

I'm not great at lying either and I'm a rather nervous person in general so I'm sure I came off more nervous than I imagined I was in my head. I also think that I over hyped it by coming up with this elaborate story. This is why I was thinking about asking to use the field for my amateur astronomy hobby. it wouldn't really be a lie, I actually would do some star gazing but while I was at it I would do some hunting as well. I don't know, I have a feeling that anything science related would be seen as witch craft. Maybe that's an overgeneralization. I'm not originally from the south so I tend to stereotype. I need to shed my prejudices.

Yes, unfortunately I'm not originally from Texas or the south for that matter so I'm not entirely accustomed to this guns n' Jesus culture. The ranchers where I'm from were super cool and mostly old hippies themselves.

Well, you lied to her and she called you on it.

That makes you the bitch, not her.  She was full on in her right to ask for ID and call baloney on you.

People have a right to keep their property private and not allow you to trespass.  That doesn't make them bad people.

I'd probably turn you down as well if you showed up at my door with a fake story you couldn't back up.

Don't assume hunting mushrooms makes you better than other people.

I would think zero percent of people will let you onto their property. They have everything to lose and nothing to gain. You break your ankle and sue them? You steal some of their shit? You case the place and bring back a crew that robs and rapes their family? My lifelong friends mother just got raped and murdered by a Mexican she hired to do some painting. She just sold her house for two million and was about to retire. It’s a rural community too. It’s a crazy world. Don’t be nieve and shoot to kill. 😉

I'm sorry about your friends mother but there are people that will let you hunt,I know first hand, it's the only way I can do it today, I can't run fast enough anymore.
