Police in Indonesia have arrested several teenagers who reportedly used the chemicals in menstrual pads as a means to get high.

According to Vice, Adj. Sr. Comr. Suprinarto, the head of the Central Java branch of the National Drug Agency (BNN), says some teens — most between the ages of 13 and 16 — have been boiling both new and used sanitary napkins in an effort to distill and ingest the chemicals inside the products.

The result: Hallucinations and feelings of “flying,” according to The Jakarta Post. The Daily Mail, citing an Indonesian news outlet, reported that a 14-year-old admitted to police that he and his friends drink the concoction “morning, afternoon, and evening.”

But in Indonesia, the Ministry of Health is reportedly investigating what exactly in the pads causes the intoxicating effects. (Julie Weber, director of the Missouri Poison Center, tells Teen Vogue, “There is no toxicologic basis that this can cause a wanted high.”) One thing experts can agree on is that consuming the chemicals within them is a dangerous practice. Yessi Permana, a chemical researcher at Bandung’s Institute of Technology, told Tempo that sanitary napkins contain irritants called superabsorbent polymers (SAP) that “should be prevented from entering the body.”

Jordana Kier, cofounder of reproductive health brand LOLA, tells Teen Vogue that SAP, which is not used in LOLA’s organic cotton pads, “is made from chemically blending acrylic acid and sodium hydroxide to form sodium polyacrylate.”

She notes that even though the FDA classifies SAP as non-toxic, it hasn't been tested for effects of consuming it in high concentrations. “The only toxicological tests that were run were performed on the skin and in eyes where they identified a possible irritating effect,” she says. “Further, instructions for handling require precautionary measures for handling chemicals and suggest wearing protective respiration gear, gloves, and safety glasses. Based on these precautionary measures and qualifications for safe storage, one could easily imply that consuming high concentrations of SAP is dangerous.”

And while it may not have been tested for consumption in high concentration, a material safety data sheet for the product does include warnings for inhalation and ingestion, the latter of which comes with a directive to “induce vomiting and seek medical attention.”

The trend isn’t new — Jimy Ginting, a safe drinking advocate, told The Jakarta Post that it also happened in 2016 — but Tempo reported the number of people partaking has apparently increased. “In 2017, there were only a few,” Sitty Hikmawatty, a member of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), told the news outlet. “Nowadays more and more of them are doing it. This is very disturbing.”

Vice pointed out that more than a billion pads are thrown away every month in Indonesia — tampons are taboo — making them readily available. “The materials they’re using are legal, but they’re not being used in a way that’s intended, so it ends up being used like a drug,” Suprinarto told Jawa Post, as reported by Vice. “We need to take steps to educate people that there are materials that aren’t classified as drugs or psychotropics in the eyes of the law, but can still be misused.”

According to Vice, Hikmawatty told the press, “A lot of these kids are smart, and with the Internet they can make new variants and concoctions. This is where the risk factor goes up because they’re only concerned with one substance in a mixture, ignoring other substances, leaving open the possibility of fatal side effects.”
