Indonesia: Possible 20-Year Sentence for under Two Grams of Pot

A 48-year-old Australian man is facing 20 years behind bars in Indonesia. Robert McJannett was arrested in Bali in December after customs officers allegedly discovered 1.7 grams of marijuana in his bag. Under "harsh new drug laws introduced last year" in Indonesia, McJannett faces 5 to fifteen years for importing pot. Additionally, McJannett is being charged with possession, which carries a sentence of 4 to twelve years, as well as at least two less serious offenses.

The prosecution is attempting to paint McJannett as "an ‘addict who has used marijuana for more than 30 years."

Indonesia is also where fellow Australian Schapelle Corby was arrested and is currently serving a 20-year sentence for "importing" marijuana. In 2004, customs officers in Bali discovered over nine pounds of marijuana in Corby's boogie board bag.

According to at least one source, McJannett claimed to be the victim of a set-up when he was arrested. Corby made a similar claim and to this day maintains her innocence.

McJannet's trail is adjourned until next week.

Balinese customs is really questionable imo. Alot of the evidence in the Corby case didn't make sense... ie they never checked for her fingerprints on the bag of pot and then lost it (if i can remember properly)

And then there were big questions raised about the baggage handlers in AUS (being part of a smuggling operation).

But getting back to the topic... Indonesian drug laws are fucked, and executions are commonplace for drug offences.

This is most defenitely a country that i will never visit as tourist. This kind of inhuman law enforcement is to be expected from a government that allows big corporations to destroy their rainforests at shattering rate.

I have mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, the guy shouldn't have tried to bring weed into the country, knowing how harsh the laws are there. On the other hand, that is an incredibly draconian penalty for such a a small amount.

I don't think very highly of the indo govt either... but it truly is a beautiful place to visit. I have been to Bali numerous times and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. But then Bali is somewhat unique amongst the other islands (a Hindu island in a Muslim country).

In Bali you can get shroom easily with cheap price ! Almost every corner of the street sells (especially Kuta).

Iam Indonesia, and im enjoying live here. Im big marijuana boy, i enjoy weed(ngebaks we called it) everyday of my life.
i know the law is fuckin tormenting, but i do play safe. And it's funny to do hide and seek with police's informer (we called him "cepu")
