Anyway, I can cause it to happen without any stimulus. For me thinking about the experience of having asmr is enough to cause an asmr episode

Precisely. Simply focusing on my breath is often enough; but far from a guarantee.

I can still recall the very first time I experienced it with any gravity - I can recall how hard it hit me at the time - that, should I learn to be able to cultivate the feeling entirely at will, it would potentially signal the end of my desire to alter my consciousness through the ingestion of extraneous compounds.

I'm still pretty far from that point, and perhaps will never reach it, but it's a nice ideal nonetheless.

It will only destroy what you are not.

I am simply questioning whether or not it can be categorized as ASMR or not.

I would not have suggested what I experienced was, were it not entirely in line with the literature and descriptions provided.

Your questioning seemed entirely unnecessary to me. It is akin to asking a man if he enjoys a sunrise, and when he says yes, asking him 'but are you sure you actually enjoyed it?'

Questioning a mans subjective experience, to me, signifies aloofness - which is why I pointed it out.

Well, I didn't know that, you could have been mistaken, it happens, people make mistakes even aloof ones like me

I don't think your analogy is correct, a better analogy would be:

It is akin to asking a man if he enjoys a sunrise, and when he says yes, asking him 'but are you sure that it was actually a sunrise and not, for example, a burning aircraft plummeting to Earth?'

Oops, that would only apply for a sunset not a sunrise, but you see what I mean

Hehe.

Wow. That is pretty interesting, I wish I could do that.

What was the situation you were in when you discovered it for the first time?

Hahaha. Same. When I first had ASMR I was like, shit, this is what I've been missing all my life.

Tolerance to ASMR does build up over time it seems, but it reaches a plateau which is still enjoyable, and a tolerance break of even a few hours, or switching ASMR triggers, seems to help for me.

Nice. Thanks for taking it well man.

I was on my first motorbike (on the road) sitting at traffic lights on my way into central London on a gorgeous English summer day. The feeling of absolute freedom was what triggered it I think.

Pretty sure I'd had it before that listening to music as a youth, but as I said; with nowhere near the same gravity. By the point I was able to positively identify it I was already heading down a somewhat spiritual path - which I think was what gave it the weight.

On a good day, I'll experience it no less than ten times a day. I just experienced it in meditation several times between my last posts and this one.

What is the tolerance of which you speak? I've never experienced that.

Wow that sounds great.

10 times a day is a lot.

The only experience I've had that sounds vaguely similar:
It usually happens when I'm sitting or standing still, perhaps outside on a nice day, and I just relax and breathe calmly and focus on the "The Felt Moment of Immediate Experience" as Terence McKenna calls it.

But it certainly isn't tingly and not as intense as you feel, it is just a mild euphoria coupled with an intense feeling of well-being and wholeness, if that makes sense.

And about the tolerance, well, the first time I experienced ASMR was watching a popular ASMR video on YouTube after a friend introduced me to the phenomenon.
It was so amazing that I ended up using up all the data on my phone watching ASMR videos that night

However, after a while, the intensity seemed to diminish, and especially the tingles.

I can listen to ASMR all day and still enjoy the mildly relaxed feeling it gives me, but after maybe 20 minutes of listening non-stop, the ability to experience actual tingles (which I often feel in a very specific part of my back) disappears.

Currently, I listen to ASMR for a couple of hours every day, sometimes skipping a day, and it is still really nice, but I rarely get tingles.

I recall I took a tolerance break once (not intentionally, but I had other things going on and I didn't think of listening to ASMR) and when I returned to it, it was muuuuch better.

However, I wouldn't really find myself taking frequent tolerance breaks because I don't listen to it primarily for tingles, I prefer the feeling of well-being and the increased ability to focus that comes with ASMR.

The same thing happened with weed, actually. The first time I smoked weed I felt the most awesome tingling/buzzing throughout my body, but after smoking about 3 times, this disappeared completely, no matter how much I smoked :frown:

Hahaha.
