Im thinking about joining silverbays seasfood for the Alaska salmon season. They are coming to Houston in March for a recruiting event, but the season doesnt start till June or July? Has anyone done this? Do you know how it works?

I spent a season up there working on a boat. The company you work for generally provides dorm style housing. Work can be sporadic, depending on if the fishing is good. The hourly wage isn't very high, but when it gets busy you can work endless hours. Don't bother going unless you're willing to put in 80+ hour work weeks with no days off. You'll probably have to buy your own plane ticket which might be $2000 or more round trip. The work is tedious and repetative. Carpel tunnel and those kind of injuries are common. Be careful not to cut yourself cause you'll be shit out of luck. Check out the Red Dog. And most importantly, wear a condom if you hook up!

yes I do actually know, ( not from experience) but I was a meatcutter for 3 years and I spoke extensively with a co-worker who did something similar and told me all about it... give me a second and I will give more details about his in depth story.

The bottom line( no puns intended) is that if this Alaskan thing is a "pipe dream"( meaning you were drunk or high while imagining it) than think again.
Let me explain. I'm not here to crush your dreams of hard, dangerous, un-insured work, but I do think that for the right person, the Alaskan salmon dream is a good fit.
You must absolutely be drug free, sober, fit, in shape, and quick and witty.
If you are that, then you could save tons of money by catching a freighter up to Alaska from the states.
If you DO NOT have a passport, DO NOT go into Canada, because you won't be able to get out, or back into the US>
The key, from a man who did it for ten years, is to DO THE RESEARCH. Don't jump, or sign off on the first deal that comes your way.
Read for hours and hours. And I mean tons of time, by searching google and what it is like. If you think you can handle it, go for it.
Be careful the company you sign up for and make sure to research the eff out of it, and get EVERYTHING in writing.

If you're serious about going up there to make money you should try to get on boat instead of working in a processing plant. The first year you might not make much money but your percentage will increase each year. If you have specific questions I might have some answers.

True, me too. I was just giving generalized advice.
But to be honest, there's much better ways to make money and explore alaska than being a slave on a meat cutting processing boat.

Having worked in the industry but not up in Alaska for a couple years It's a good way to make money fast. But the work is sporadic and you're either working constantly or laid off until the next season begins.

the company im looking at pays for your plane ticket and provides housing for like 50$ a day or something. Also, i think its up to 16 hour days. Also, the boat would be tight. But i was under the impression that this would be factory work, like working on a line processing the fish for distribution. I hear you can go out and work a couple months and come back back with like 8 grand.

so, 16 hours a day times two months at ten dollars an hour is almost 10 " grand"
you'd make may more, more safely, working for 8 bucks an hour, 40 hours a week, close to home.

So they charge $50 a day for housing?! What's the hourly wage? Keep in mind food costs 3-4 times what it does in the lower 48. You'll go out for pizza and it'll cost $40-$50 for one pizza.
If you can afford the plane ticket, fly up before the season starts. Just start hitting the docks and talking to people and you'll probably be able to get on a tender or fishing boat.
There's tons of seasonal work in Alaska. If you want to experience it and not feel like a slave, look into hunting and fishing lodges and apply to those. You could get hired as a cook, dish washer, waiter, etc. and probably get free room and board. Check out the Kenai.

good advice, for sure.
I went to the pacific northwest for a season, and I'm a florida boy.
So, there IS adventure out there, just don't do it for money.

don't be tempted by states like Oregon or Washington or even Alaska offering $16-$20 an hour for work, " no experience needed"
even if you "make the cut" that $20 an hour is less than $10 an hour after taxes, living costs, and higher fuel/entertainment.

It wouldn't be bad if you owned your own tractor and did contract work for companies. I can actually get mine if I wanted to but i don't have a tractor-trailer to take to the dmv for the driving portion
