New Netflix Devilman anime! * 2
    #24897077 -

I have been looking forward to this for awhile. Devilman is a classic manga that came out in the early 70's.

At it's heart it's an anti war story with heavy supernatural elements, one of it's main messages is that Humans are the real devils in many cases.

It was considered Shonen (manga for younger audiences) in the 70's but the story gets very dark and violent and Netflix has really expanded on that making it a lot more sexual as well.

Definitely worth checking out! I am on ep 7/10 and it's been great so far overall, they changed some small stuff but it seems to be doing the original story justice.

You can find the full 10 episodes online already, but if you have netflix especially check it out. Hopefully if it is popular they will make some more great adaptions :awesomenod:

I have been watching it on this site for any lazy peeps: https://watchanimeonlines.net/anime/devilman-crybaby/

Just a warning, like I said it gets pretty dark at times. So don't let the anime format fool you  The intro is a bit cheesy too which is common, but the animation is pretty solid. Looks like a modern version of classic animation in a way. It also get's very sexual, in some good and bad ways depending on your preferences :tongue2: I don't remember the manga being too sexual but I can't blame netflix too much for adding some stuff.

Anyways stoned ramble over :stoned: Check out the manga too as it's a serious classic with a great message.

I just finished bingeing it over a few days.

Pretty great overall, I'd give it a 7/10. They changed some things and added some random stuff but they still captured the overall story pretty well.

The ending was done really well IMO, some people will probably find it weird as it has a pretty abstract ending that you wouldn't see coming really

But I enjoyed it a lot. Don't be fooled by the first few episodes, it escalates into a full on Apocalypse by the end, and it gets very very dark and gruesome at tines

Anyways if you like anime check it out, the Manga is also very worth reading and there is an older adaption of the early parts of the story that is decent.

Here are some choice pics of the show:

This pic is of the "Sabbath" which is a satanic drug fueled party

This is the demon Psycho Jenny who is about to use psychic powers to make a bunch of soldiers go crazy/ trip the fuck out.

There aren't a ton of pics up as it just came out, but it has solid animation for being Netflix's 2nd anime or so.

I hope they do a Violence Jack anime next, it's by the same Author as Devilman and takes place after in a fucked up post apocalyptic world.

Let me know what you think. I was surprised how violent netflix made it, the manga was violent and dark but they really didn't hold back at all

They really took advantage of it not airing on TV, so they made the violent and sexual parts over the top :tongue2:

It's a lot more then just violence though, it's a pretty unique take on the concept of devils and supernatural creatures. As well as an intense social commentary that really shows the worst parts of humanity.

It has some inspiring parts too though. The creator Go Nagai also was behind YuYu Hakusho which is another classic supernatural manga,

Not a hardcore anime person but I might check it out. I can dig a 10 episode run...

You said it's a classic and been around since the 70's so I was curious, why make a show now?  But I went and searched, I guess there was some stuff done way back too.

I love YuYu Hakusho too, really great plot and funny 80's soundtrack  Been meaning to read the manga as I bet there's a fair amount the anime leaves out even though it's pretty long.

It has some cheesy anime elements especially for the first few episodes while the plot picks up the pace. But I think it's pretty abstract and deep for an anime in a lot of ways.

It has some really dark and brutally honest social critique, that and the violence is probably part of why it never got the adaption it deserves. It would be very risky, that and there's a lot of stuff you even now couldn't get away with putting on TV, especially in Japan  So they would have had to censor it way more which would partially defeat the purpose.

Being from the 70's though it has definitely inspired a lot of other stuff over the years, including Berserk which in turn inspired Dark Souls and a ton of art/media.

I have wondered how that is. Check out Go Nagai's World then you might dig it too, it's sort of a crossover of Devilman Violence Jack and Mazinger which is another of Go's manga. It was a TV special that ties some loose ends and has a great lighthearted balance to the end of Devilman, it's a "chibi" anime so everyone is animated short/funny looking which they make fun of a lot. But watch Devilman first or it will spoil a lot.

Just watched the first episode of Devilman. . Definitely not my taste. Seems like it is trying way too hard to be offensive and disgusting.

I like violent disgusting animes but that was just awful. It feels too rushed and shallow, and is terribly animated.

I wasn't offended by any of it, I just like my gore and sex to add to the story and emotions of a show not be the main focus.

It was only the first episode, but that ruined it for me.

You should try and make it a bit farther, it's the kind of story that slowly picks up the pace. I don't think it's shallow whatsoever once it gets going.

The sex is the only thing that they really added, the original story was pretty dark/gruesome which is a bit part of the point the story makes.

What about the animation did you think was terrible? I didn't find it amazing but I thought it was pretty solid, Netflix has only done a few anime before so you shouldn't expect perfection from them right away  It certainly looks much much better then the original Devilman adaption and the manga which is decades old now

Devilman has a lot in common with berserk, it's very dark and gruesome but it's a big part of the story and the points the plot is making around humanity.

Devilman was originally made as an anti war piece to try and show the younger generation the horror of war and that humans are the real devils in the end. I don't think that's shallow at all personally, very intense and dark at times but not shallow.

Netflix really went over the top with the sexual stuff in the first few episodes. The manga has like a fraction of that

Streaming channels are the future of TV, way less creative limits in terms of what is "ok" to show on TV.

I actually really enjoyed berserk (I haven't read any manna, just watched a decent amount of anime) and wish it didn't have to have an abrupt ending because of the cancellation.

The animation isn't too terrible, I exaggerated that point. I've accepted far worse. It added to the feeling of shallowness in my mind though.

It just starts out too quickly and throws you into having to accept too many things that seem immaturaly presented. It doesn't give you much to really grasp to reality with. It felt like super jail's retarded demonic brother.

I promise to at least watch the first 3 episodes. I may change my mind.

You just described like 90% of anime

I just think it's silly to judge based off 1 episode. The story gets pretty damned mature at points, I was very surprised it was considered Shonen in the 70's. I feel like it would be Seinen by today's standards.

It really gets intense once the apocalypse starts, there is a pretty good twist towards the end too though I think Netflix was a lot less subtle about it then the manga.

The show has a 7.7 on IMDB so far which is about what I would rate it (6-8/10 or so) Which is pretty good, hopefully it's popular enough for netflix to try out some more anime.

They seem like the perfect place for an amazing Berserk of Gantz adaption, those stories are both amazing but too violent and dark for TV. But netflix could adapt them with minimal censoring.

I finished it last night and bravo what a fun ride that was!! I loved all the allegorical themes and those dramatic animations. I watched a bit of the original anime and never really finished it, figured it would be remade one day and here we are.
