Wow badass man I didn’t see an identical picture when googling slag but certainly there was really similar pics, definitely the closest guess, probably exactly what it is.

So from what I can gather about the mine which there is very scarce info about for some reason.. It was used during the 1800’s as a water discharge for the hydroelectric station that’s been in that location forever.

I dunno the specifics of hydroelectric power but could the Slag be related to the generating station? It has since been moved to a taller drop and isn’t operating exactly where I found the green rock but I guess it could be old as fuck or something?

Or maybe the slag isn’t related to the power station at all..


It does look like a silica compound. Maybe try a search for silica minerals?


Canada and Ontario specifically have really great prospecting... prospects. Some really nice public mines too. Some of them nice enough to not even be salted.

I have a Geology degree and this doesn't really look like slag however we try not to identify without it being physically present and identifying off of color alone is pretty frowned upon also... There's a series of pretty simple tests you could preform at home to narrow down what it may be but the "broken glass" look on the surface is something I've never seen with slag.

Like a luster test or the mohs hardness thing? I have also never seen that broken glass look with slag, so my guess is probably wrong. I think it's cool that you're a geologist :smile: makes me think of Randy from South Park

Yep, scratch tests, acid, those types of simple things make a huge difference in narrowing it down... Slag reminds me more of a big, green piece of obsidian. I remember finding it all over Georgia when I was a kid.

That could be due to the algae, and/or bacteria dying after being removed from its environment. Happens with a lot of my finds after bringing them home.

That is slag,op....There were once iron forges allover the northeast US and Canada. I believe it is what is left over after the iron melts out of it. The iron to slag ratio is pretty low so they wound up dumping it all over the place because there was so much. Pennsylvania is loaded with these old furnaces....many are still standing.

I always found it at the Catoctin Forge. Maybe that piece only had a thin layer of the glassy part, and over time it cracked giving it that broken glass look.

yeah there's a tunnel I want to explore but i dont want to go alone and my friend says he doesn't want to slip and fall in the water (a stream runs through it then goes over a couple waterfalls). we walk past it almost every time we go hiking but he won't go in.

and my cousin says he's down to check it out but he's flakey.

I might go in alone as long as I have someone to wait outside.

Have fun going to the twilight zone

I Went on a crazy long bike ride the other night at 3 am into the pitch black off road

to see the stars and sun rise it was kind of creepy at first than it was funny
