Technically, Holland are two provinces in The Netherlands, not the whole country.

How does a country you can drive across in two hours have provinces?

I like the French name for the Netherlands: pays-bas. The low county.

We call it De Lage Landen "The Lowlands" ourselves, this because we are basically a flat delta where a few major rivers flow into the sea.

Coffeeshops (weed and hash) can only be visited by a Dutch national with a passport nowadays (blame the fucking VVD) but they'll be able to buy 5 grams a day there AND can visit several coffeeshops to do just that.

People from the Netherlands are called Dutch, but what I don't understand is, why is Pennsylvanian Dutch considered not actually dutch? Hella puzzling.

Probably has something to do with the German word for "German" having a similar spelling to "Dutch".

Quote:
There are three terms we need to define: Holland, the Netherlands, and Dutch. In Old English dutch simply meant “people or nation.” (This also explains why Germany is called Deutschland in German.) Over time, English-speaking people used the word Dutch to describe people from both the Netherlands and Germany. (At that point in time, in the early 1500s, the Netherlands and parts of Germany, along with Belgium and Luxembourg, were all part of the Holy Roman Empire.) Specifically the phrase “High Dutch” referred to people from the mountainous area of what is now southern Germany. “Low Dutch” referred to people from the flatlands in what is now the Netherlands. Within the Holy Roman Empire, the word “Netherlands” was used to describe people from the low-lying (nether) region (land). The term was so widely used that when they became a formal, separate country in 1815, they became the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The word “Holland” literally meant “wood-land” in Old English and originally referred to people from the northern region of the Netherlands. Over time, it came to apply to the entire country.

I was there in Feb and going back this weekend. Fruits are banned but I think you can still get them in some places, truffles are definitely sold anyway and you don't need a passport to sit in a coffee shop like someone weirdly said.

Coming from the UK though it is getting stupidly expensive to visit. :frown: Between 6 and 10 Euros for a pint so up to £10 for some Heineken. Bad times.

I have a couple good job offers in the Netherlands. Been looking at housing options. The netherlands looks boring as hell. It's flatter than fuck. There appears to be nothing interesting to see out there. Housing looks dull as ever. I'm starting to have second thoughts about going out there for work. Can't find a place to live that wont rob me of half my pay check for a depressing tiny room with slanted ceilings. Makes me dream about how awesome the United States is. I fucking love America!

I don't understand why The Netherlands and Germany and basically all of Europe has to be so divided into different countries and stuff, why can't it just be one big country liked the United States of America? If they were one big country that would also solve the huge language barrier they have in Europe also, because in the USA we just have one language, English, but in europe they have like so many different languages I dont even know all of them.

There are 44 countries in Europe.

There are 50 States in the US.

Europeans have more than one language because they have to learn a second or a third. They are therefore more intelligent. Everybody in Europe speak there native language and english plus maybe the neighboring country's language.
