The Cottingley Fairies
    #2465318 - 03/23/04 08:52 PM (20 years, 9 days ago)

This photograph was taken in 1917 by a 16 and 9 year-old girls. The prevailing logic was that they couldn't have possibly faked it as they were too young and inexperienced to have the know-how. Hence the photographs MUST be genuine.

It was not until 1983 that Elsie Wright then aged 83, finally admitted that the photographs had been faked. (Just like the BigFoot and Nessie hoaxsters who came clean in old age.) She claimed that they had been made with pictures cut out of Magazines, held up with hatpins.

No one learns as each generation brings a new crop of those wishing extra hard to believe in magic.

How depressing.

Not only do those jokes delude all those who believe in them, they also waste countless hours devoted to "discovering" the subjects of the hoaxes.

History is indeed a lie.

So if these women also faked their orgasims, then all women can't have orgasims?

I think the point is to challenge what you believe, even when it's widely accepted as true.

I agree with Special. So that is ONE incident of someone faking it. Is everyone else faking it?

my question is.. we believe her because 70 years later she says it's false.. and why do we believe her? she could easily be lying about that..

just as easily as lying about the authenticity of the photo

so if I had some pictures of me chilling with aliens, and said they were fake, you would believe me.. but then if 70 years later I said no, it was a lie.. they were real.. that means that they were real?

I think the matter of the case is that the ONLY evidence being presented is a hoax. Sure, some women fake their orgasms, but the female orgasm has been scientifically proven to be real.

How do you prove it to be real each time it "appears" to have happened?

You don't, but it has been proven at least that the female orgasm is indeed possible, and in fact not all that difficult for them to achieve.

no it doesnt mean they were real if that was the case. I think that is what swami is trying to prove.

Just cause someone said it cant be faked doesnt mean that it is real. Using fallacious reasoning accompanies many people who wish to try and support their claims... IT so happens this one is fairies. Whether fairies exist or not is a very hard thing to prove. Maybe someone has seen them, but because you saw them doesnt mean they are real... they could be a part of the imagination, the brain, a deullusion... as well it could have been part of some other dimension. But the likelihood of proving such a thing is so horrible complex... i bet that it is near impossible.

But for me... Its hard to prove anything, other than that i see things period. How can i trust myself? SOmetimes i think its an illusion... but i try not to dellude myself. I just let it go. Its a crazy world.  :stoned:

prove that you 'feel good' swami...... please whip out the emotion meter and start measuring them! OH wait! you cant........ does that mean you dont feel a burn when you touch something hot? IT MUST because you cant prove it by science.... dont even say that emotions/feelings can be explained by scienece as a function of the brain ei ther.

Um, most emotions (moods, thoughts, feelings, etc) can be proven as a direct result of specific brain chemistry.  Even  love.

Regarding the fairy pics...hmm, the idea of fairies is charming and would make life even more interesting, but like most people, I have a hard time believing things I've never witnessed.

But maybe the grannies decided to take back their claims to save fairyland from human exposure

or maybe the point is to base your own beleifs on things YOU see, not that others tell you. thats why there is no 'spirituality' without some experience.

>dont even say that emotions/feelings can be explained by scienece as a function of the brain ei ther.
-When someone refuses to aknowledge something that is true, the only thing you can do is aknowledge that it is their right to remain uneducated.

>or maybe the point is to base your own beleifs on things YOU see, not that others tell you. thats why there is no 'spirituality' without some experience.
-In my opinion, spirituality is directly related to experience. However, experience is subjective meaning it's often different for different people. If you aknowledge that you live in a reality with other people, you must admit that these other people have different personal realities developed than you. What does this mean? People choose to live outside of a common reality, they rely too heavily on experience... people can find support in almost any experience for what they already believe. This means many people engage in activities that draw them farther and farther from the truth while feeling they are getting closer and closer. Any conflict in recorded history can be traced back to differences in personal reality "shells" that people have developed.
