I tended bar for 5 years at a busy club. Unless youre an attractive girl, dont do it. Seriously. It sucks.

Ive watched a lot of Bar Rescue on TV, so i consider myself an expert.

Dont over pour the liquor. Rule #1.
Test-taste all drinks that are new to u using a clean straw, hold the finger on one side to create a vacuum. This ensures a well made drink.
Try to smile and make eye contact while u mix drinks.
Practice mixing simple, common drinks at home with a mixer and a booklet made for bartending (check eBay or Amazon).
Use clean glasses and kept your work area clean!
Dont shake carbonated drinks in your shaker!
Use the appopriate glass for a drink, for example a short glass for rum and coke, martini glass for a martini.
Dont do anything gross in front of customers.
Dont get drunk on the job.
Try to work Friday and Saturday. Best days to bartend.
Practice, practice, practice your drink making!

Ive known tenders to water down any drinks a customer gives them, so they can avoid getting drunk on the job

It's easier for an attractive female in most cases, sure, but guys can do well tending bar too.  Female bartenders have a pretty big advantage without being attractive or particularly good at drink service though because much of the time they're more naturally suited for the social aspect of the job.

OP it helps if you are extroverted and well spoken, can make folks laugh, can mediate, can work at a fast pace for hours with no break, and handle stress on the job in a healthy manner.

Make your own twist on drinks for return customers and make them feel special.

Good advice from Logical

bitcoin you first have to start with what kind of place you are trying to work at, that will determine the style of tending you will do.

cocktail theory is pretty regular with a few key ratios.

prepare to drink a lot.

Thats weird for a person to buy the bartender a drink. I mean, it makes sense if youre a female tender, but for a guy? :whattefuck2:

Get a guy nice and drunk at the bar while cheering him up and he may buy anyone who smiles at him a drink

I haven't seen it happen much outside of nightclubs but it's not that unheard of.

Every bartender and barback I've ever know has become an alcoholic and they have always struggled to stay out of debt. It's a nice start until you find a good job though.

I have been in the hospitality industry for 10 years, have bartended at a private club, run a beverage program and I'm a certified sommelier. Working any and every restaurant job I could find, living breathing hospitality, working in sane hours, and soaking up product knowledge like a sponge has all helped me get to where I'm at. What hasn't helped me one bit is the 200 bucks I spent at bartending school.

Bellow are few things I've picked up along the way.

*You can learn how to make any cocktail but you gotta have the natural ability not to be a Prick.  Hospitality and Humility go hand in hand.  Your guest are everything.  I don't care if you can make a perfect Aviation if you don't have a guest first mentality you are not going to be on my radar.

*Drinking on the Job is perfectly acceptable behavior.  How can you gain product knowledge unless you taste?  That being said stick to tasting your product not guzzling it.

*High Volume vrs. High Dollar.  There are two ways to make money in an industry driven by tips, volume (Or the amount of covers/people you serve in a night.)  or high check averages (the amount of money each guest spends on average at your place of business.  Yes that night club downtown allows you to rake in 300 a night but you're there till 5am.  You only waited on 15 covers in the white linen steakhouse uptown.  But you made but you made over 200$ on that six top that bought 2 bottles of Trefethan Halo (that's $320 a pop on your list.)The choice just depends on the individual.  Fine Dinning (at least from my experience) is less work for the same (and sometimes more) money than an high volume establishment.

Wine Certifications:  WSET=When you want to go to school to learn about wine.  Lots of classes, purely theory based course.  Also expensive as hell.

Court of Master Sommeliers=When you want to focus on the restaurant side of beverage.  All beverage with a key focus on service in hand with Theory.  Incredibly difficult self study (expensive as well.)  However if you get certified though the court.  No one will be wanting you to get a WSET.

Cheers

yea don't go to bartending school that is a red flag that you don't know what the hell you are doing.

i agree with chel, higher price points usually equal better gratuity but you also have to factor in how much of an inconvenience affluent customers can be. there is a fine line between easier money (less covers) and the intensity of said covers. i personally find fine dining to be a pain in the ass due to want to be know it all ignorant guests that have no idea about food preparation or service.

it is nice having a great kitchen to back up your upselling.

most people want to try and talk food and beverage but generally are confused as to the different nuances of products and you have to try and educate guests but not insult them or their knowledge. lots of ego management behind a bar, knowing what to say when and how to defuse or infuse situations.
