Flynn Resigns. Kellogg steps in (temporarily) UPDATE

So, here's a big news day for tomorrow.

Michael Flynn amidst allegations of a transcript revealing that he indeed discussed sanctions with Russian nationals in December.  There were Justice Department concerns that a recording of that conversation could be used as blackmail.

So, he has resigned.

Kellogg seems like a qualified replacement for now.  I don't know what experience he has with running intelligence agencies.  He ran the 82nd Airborne for a good part of his career, though.  He was already on the NSC.

UPDATE According to the press secretary, the president is in the process of selecting a permanent replacement for Kelly.

UPDATE Naval Officer Vice-Admiral Robert Harward, former Navy Seal reported pick to replace Flynn permanantly:

Huh?

He took a phone call from a Russian national concerned about sudden sanctions levied by a lame duck president.

He talked about the sanctions and expressed an opinion that they would look at everything once they got into office.

Pence asked him about the call and whether or not they discussed sanctions.

Flynn lied.

Had he told the truth, the administration would have had to admit that it was true.  Had that happened, I doubt anything would have come of it of any consequence. 

But, instead, he lied, which opened him up to integrity concerns and the susceptibility he may have put himself if the Russians had recorded the call. 

But since he lied, the scandal was able to grow.  And Trump had to let him go.

By saying "we will review everything when we get into office"?

I thought it was a smart move too when Russia didn't take the sanctions seriously.  Does that mean Flynn is doing what I wanted?

trump has a Russia problem. He cant explain away the absurd amount of deference his administration has granted putin anymore. maybe its just a very bizarre worldview, or maybe people are compromised.

The Logan act really is applying to this whole situation in a way it wasn't intended to. I could see why the Logan act would be a good thing to keep incoming administrations from undermining foreign policy of the current administration. But what if the foreign policy of the current administration is a reactionary provocation based on fake news that was fabricated in response to the election? Flynn merely reassured Russia that the US wasn't going to continue being a rogue, unprovoked aggressor like it was under Obama. So was the Logan act technically violated? Probably. But where Flynn fucked up was lying to Pence. No one lies to the silver fox, and I'm glad he's gone.

So, is Trump lying? Or does he have no clue what is going on in his administration?


Have you considered the possibility that Yates is lying?

She has already shown a complete lack of integrity by openly defying an executive order.  Why is her credibility unimpugned in your eyes?  Because her story fits your narrative?

It's not her story. The story is about what she and other intelligence officers told the trump administration weeks at about the wiretapped convo and how Flynn was lying. The source is probably many of the majority of trump staff that are leaking like the titanic after it hit the iceberg.

As for Yates, she did her job. She told her client, the president, that his executive order was illegal and she could not defend it in court. The courts decision vindicates her principled position. No lawyer is obligated to make invalid arguments. It would be unethical for a lawyer to make an argument they believed was unconstitutional.

You're wrong.  Judges decide constitutionality, not lawyers.  As the AG, her job is to argue on behalf of the president.  If she is morally incapable of doing so, she should step down.

That's not how it played out though, is it?

No, lawyers present a case based on their interpretation of the law. Judges decide if the interpretation is valid. The government refuses to defend laws fairly often if they believe that the law is unconstitutional. For example, even though the defense of marriage act was a federal law, the Obama administration would not defend it at the Supreme Court. the same thing happened with Prop 8 in California. It would normally be the governments job to defend a law, but if their lawyers do not believe they can make a valid legal argument for their side, they will simply refuse to do so.
