I'm curious to know if that's before or after taxes.

What city was he operating in? Busy district?

Supposedly there's a hot dog stand who pays the city of New York over $1 million a year for a permit to have his stand kept at the busiest intersection of the city.

Which means he must profit in much more than that, to pay the city that much... :strokebeard:

That's insanity. But I guess even if he profits less than half that it's still a worthwhile venture. But damn.

How can 1 cart even do that many transactions a day. I dunno maybe it isn't as hard or crazy as I think but still, a million +?

Seems like it would be difficult to cook that many hotdogs a day and have that many customers.

Probably like a $9-11 hotdog though.

It takes like 30sec to prep a hot dog, so $7.50 a dog x 60 an hour (16hr day x 365)

2.6 million, after business expenses the guy could walk away with like $3.50

If he lives in his hotdog cart he's getting away with high way robbery. Cheapest rent downtown.

Those figures are based off NYC vendors who charge around $2 per hotdog.

60 dogs an hour all day is not really realistic though, I mean most people only order 1 or 2 hot dogs and it takes a couple minutes for each person in line to decide what they want to order and pay. You can process MAYBE 30 orders in an hour, max.

Not to mention there are plenty of hours it's not going to be busy, like before noon or between 2-5PM depending on where you're located. Days where it's raining or snowing or there's a blizzard, etc.

With that said, there are supposedly close to 60 million tourists in the city every year. If you could even get a half million of those tourists (along with a sizable percentage of local New Yorkers) to buy a hot dog from you, then I guess you would easily make over a million.

Are they still $2 per hot dog?! I remember those being the prices 10 years ago.

How is NYC still selling dogs for $2, even Philly dog carts in Center City charge at least $4. Comes with a really good bratwurst or sausage instead of a hot dog, but still.

  there are all kinds of holes in that math, all considering I find it preposterous they can stay in business.

Maybe they sell meth on the side

I've been trying to figure it out too and it really doesn't make sense does it. The numbers really don't add up.

Makes sense now, why this guy was scamming people and upcharging $30 for a hot dog at his stand: http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Hot-Dog-Vendor-Charges-30-Dollars-Tourists-Rip-Off-New-York-City-304355861.html

That's one isolated scammer though. In that same article it says the cart around the corner charges $1 for a hotdog:

Quote:

At a hot dog cart around the corner, for example, there's no question how much a hot dog costs -- it's listed at $1.
